Newspapers singled out for exellence over the year

T he Mississippi Press Association held their annual Mid-Winter Convention last week.  This one is advertising oriented while the summer meeting is  editorial content.

Both the Magee Courier and the Simpson County News fared well in the annual competition, which really makes me proud.

While we compete by circulation category, meaning papers of like size, we compete against some papers that have graphic artists and some who have much larger staffs.  We won first place in Advertising Excellence and also placed in our Circulation category  for the Simpson County News.  Those are no minor tasks.

Our annual Profile Edition won first place.  We swept all categories in political advertising.  First place went to a Dale Berry advertisement for mayor.  Second place went to Matthew Hickman for an alderman seat and Brent Walker for a mayor’s ad.  The McAlpin House, along with the Johnny Knight Treehouse, won a first place best retail advertisement in color.

Best Institutional awards were won for our Simpson Academy and the Chamber Antique Car Show ads.

Trustmark won a second place for Best Financial Advertisement.

Best Healthcare went to Leaf River Veterinary Services and Healthcare Color went to Magee General Hospital Pediatric Clinic, two places, and Simpson General was awarded a second place in the same category.

Leaf River won a first for Service Ads.  Stubbs Law Firm won a first place for Best Services Offered Advertisement.

The Best Magazine advertisement Institutional or Service for all weeklies went to Family Vision Clinic.  Joe Lee SouthGroup Insurance placed second for Best Magazine Ad, All-Weeklies in the Institutional or Service category.

Polk’s Meat won a first place for Best Magazine Ad for All Weeklies for “Grilling Season is Open.”

A total of 1,381 entries from nine daily papers participated in the contest and 25 weekly newspapers participated in the weekly competition.

A special thank you to the businesses mentioned as well as the many other award winners.  We could not do it without you.

We look foward to providing you effective and attractive advertising not only for next year but for many years to come!
