Mia Barber of Magee will be honored with three scholarships next week at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn.
Barber is a 2016 high honor graduate of Magee High School and a 2022 honor graduate of Spring Hill University in Mobile, Alabama. She is now a medical student at Meharry.
During the summer Barber was one of only a few of the medical students selected to do her student internship at the Smithsonian National Museum for African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., where she was able to expand her opportunities in the life sciences.
On October 2, Barber will be awarded three scholarships recognizing her academic achievements at Meharry— the James and Virginia Merrell Foundation Scholarship, the Elizabeth McDaniel Woodard Memorial Scholarship and the Mary Hetherington Lutz Memorial Scholarship.
Guest speaker for the ceremony will be Clive Callender, M.D., a Distinguished Professor of Surgery at Howard University.
Barber’s mother, Vanesa Barber of Magee, said, “We are so proud of her remarkable achievements, accomplishments and leadership as a medical student. We look forward to celebrating her success at the convocation ceremony on October 2 in the Cal Turner Family Center for Student Education.
Mia Barber is the daughter of Pastor Willie Barber and Vanessa Barber and the mother of a 3-year-old daughter, Lelanie. She is the granddaughter of Eva Mae Barber and the late Frank Barber and Rev. Dorris McDonald and Willean McDonald. She is also the sister of Lequieta Dampier (Vernon), Devin Barber (Abby) and Jaden Barber.
