The Magee Trojans are headed to Jackson! The Trojans will compete for the 3A State Championship this Friday against Noxubee County at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 11 a.m.
The Simpson County School District has altered the weekly school schedule to give students an opportunity to support the Trojans as they battle for a state championship Friday morning.
Schools in the district will swap the weekly virtual learning day from Wednesday to Friday. This means students will attend classes at school from Monday through Thursday. Friday will be virtual and students will be expected to complete their assignments through Google Classroom.
The Trojans have been on a fantastic run, and are one win away from a perfect season. With an 11-0 record the Trojans are primed to run the table and bring the city its first championship in almost 20 years. Several Trojans fans predicted this run three years ago when the 2020 seniors were freshmen. They took their lumps early and competed hard every game. The championship potential was undeniable, and through hard work and dedication their moment has arrived.
Every game played regardless of wins and losses was a learning experience and an opportunity to grow. Their experience and effort helped lay the groundwork for one of the greatest seasons in school history. This Trojans team has winning DNA and it has been on display all season as they have risen to every challenge.
Last season the Trojans showed flashes of dominance but ultimately struggled to win close games. During the 2019 regular season the Trojans lost three games that were decided by 10 points or less. Two of these games were decided by less than 5 points and all of them came down to the wire.
This fact was not lost on the players as several of the seniors dubbed the 2020 season, the “Revenge Year”. The revenge mission is complete, and the Trojans notched wins over West Marion, Jefferson Davis County, and Columbia. Columbia ended the Trojans run last season in the third round. The Trojans were able to return the favor this year in the South State Championship Game defeating the Wildcats 14-6.
Revenge is a dish best served cold, but there is nothing icier for a high school football player than a state championship ring. It immortalizes you on a short list of champions that will never be forgotten. The Trojans are on the cusp of reaching the pinnacle of high school football.
Head Coach Teddy Dyess and his staff have done an extraordinary job of maximizing the talent on his football team and putting them in situations to succeed. The bond formed by the coaching staff and players has played a major role in their success this season. It has allowed the players to perform to their full potential regardless of the situation, and the results speak for themselves. The Trojans have been on the winning side of every type of game. They have blown out opponents, shut out opponents, played from behind, and held on to slim leads to reach this point. This is a testament to the leadership and preparation of the team.
In addition to being great athletes, players such as Chandler Pittman, Zay Franks, Cayden Bridges, Preston Grimm, Jordan Magee, Jody Durr, Jameyian Spencer, DJ Jones and others have shown great character and leadership throughout the season. The team’s trust in each other has meant the difference between winning and losing some weeks, and they will need to pull together once more to cement their place in history this Friday.
Once again the Trojans will play at Veterans Memorial Stadium on December 4, at 11:00 a.m. for the 3A State Championship.
Congratulations to the Trojans and the entire county is rooting for them to bring back that gold ball.
