A protest will be held in Simpson County this Saturday in conjunction with the Black Lives Matters movement taking place around the nation.
The protest has been organized by leaders in the black community of Simpson County. Willie Bernoudy explained that the peaceful protest will be held Saturday, June 13, at 10 a.m. at 100 West Court Avenue, Mendenhall, on the steps of the courthouse. Bernoudy explained that he has spoken with Mayor Todd Booth of Mendenhall, who has offered his support in helping host a peaceful protest. The protest will begin on the courthouse steps, followed by a march through a predetermined path.
Bernoudy explained that the purpose of the protest is to bring awareness to police brutality throughout the nation. Bernoudy said, “The black voice has been unheard, and we need to put things in place for our youth to have a voice.” Bernoudy said in addition to raising awareness to police brutality. There will also be discussions of developing the community and combating drugs and gun violence.
Bernoudy is calling for support to help spread the message. He said, “It’s time to spread the word and work for change. So let’s show up in big numbers, Simpson County. We would definitely love to have all elected officials be a part of this movement. If not, we understand your silence and where you stand.”
