The presidential primary election was held on March 10 in Mississippi. Only 5,789 ballots were cast in Simpson County of a total of 17,219 registered voters, which equaled nearly 33 percent of the voting population.
The ballot featured three races which were for president, Senate, and the Third Congressional District.
Joe Biden received 1,940 votes in the Democratic Presidential Primary for 82 percent of the vote, followed by Bernie Sanders with 331.
In the Republican Primary, President Donald Trump was the clear winner in Simpson County accounting for 98 percent of the ballots with 3,336 votes.
Mike Espy won Simpson County’s Democratic nomination for the Senate with 2,243 votes, or 95 percent. Incumbent Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith ran unopposed in the Republican Primary and received 3,293 votes in Simpson County.
Dot Benford and Katelyn Lee faced each other in the Democratic Primary for the Third Congressional District and ran the closest race of the evening. Benford won Simpson County with 1,156 votes opposed to Lee’s 859 votes. Incumbent Michael Guest won the Republican nod by a large margin, defeating James Tulp. Guest received 3,130 votes for 92 percent of the ballots cast.
Simpson County voting trends aligned with those of the state. Each winner in Simpson County also won the statewide race. National trends indicate that President Donald Trump will undoubtedly be the Republican representative for President. The Democratic nomination is between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, who are still locked in a closely contested race.
