In the past two weeks the sewer lines from Polks Meats have become clogged causing backup and leakage.
This issue has actually been occurring for years but has recently prompted complaints to the Mississippi Department of Enviromental Quality, MDEQ.
Mayor Dale Berry turned the issue over to Charlie Valadie who in addition to working with the fire department also works in building inspection matters.
Valadie reported the issue had been filed with MDEQ but as of yet they have not been able to investigate the matter. Valadie was asked since the matter had been occurring for over ten years is there reason for concern.
The reason for the clogs is the fat is hardening in the sewer line once it cools off. The red tint is red dye that is used for sausage casings.
Valadie said the dye may prevent micro-organisms from getting oxygen in the lagoon according to Steve Womack who is now contracting with the city and their waste water issues.
The city was flushing the lines on Tuesday morning. The mayor has cited this as part of the reason for problems at the city lagoon.
Julie Polk Breazeale, Chief Operating Officer, for Polks Meat said if there is an issue that we need to correct they are happy to work with the city in solving the issue.
