The town of Braxton will be without a mayor starting in July 2021, and a special election must be held to fill the vacant position.
Stephanie Lee was the fourth mayor the town of Braxton has had in the last four years since previous mayor Mable Everett passed away. Lee served on the Braxton Board of Aldermen for two months before making the decision to run for mayor. Lee is finishing Everett’s term, which ends in June.
During the qualifying period for the upcoming municipal elections Lee was the only candidate to qualify for the office of mayor. She has since reconsidered running for the position. Only one candidate qualified for the alderman position, leaving four positions on the Board of Aldermen vacant.
A second qualifying period and a special election must be held to fill the vacancies. This situation has happened once before with the Board of Aldermen.
In the past, after two qualifying periods of no candidates qualifying for the offices, the board was filled through appointments from the mayor and existing board members. However the situation will be different if there is not an established mayor.
The City of Braxton could be at risk of becoming unincorporated if leadership is not established.
