Congratulations to the Magee Trojans on an outstanding baseball season finish of second in the state with a 28-7 overall record and a second consecutive district championship.
The Trojans faced the Booneville Blue Devils in the 3A State Championship in a best of three series at Trustmark Park last week.
The Trojans took the first game of the series 6-3 with Adam May as the starting pitcher. They dominated at the plate, notching 11 hits. May turned in an excellent performance on the mound allowing only two earned runs and striking out 7 batters. The Trojans looked to carry this momentum in a pivotal game 2.
Unfortunately the Trojans lost the second game by a score of 4-2. Brennon McNair started and pitched the entire game. An early homerun in the first inning saw the Blue Devils jump out to an early 2-0 lead. The game was tight defensively and the Trojans attempted to rally at the bottom of the sixth inning. RBI’s by Banks Teater and Jordan Magee helped tie the game at 2-2 going into the 7th inning.
McNair began to fatigue late in the game and the Blue Devils seized the opportunity to score the final two runs of the game. The Trojans lost and tied the series at 1-1 heading into the third and final game.
Pitching struggles plagued the Trojans from the beginning of game 3. Booneville jumped out to a fast start and led 6-1 through two innings. A two run homerun by Brennon McNair in the bottom of the third cut the deficit in half. It appeared to be a momentum shifting play, but the Blue Devils answered back with another 4 run inning in the fourth.
The Trojans never seemed to get into a groove offensively or defensively and lost the final game of the series 12-4.
Head Coach Allen Eubanks said, “It not the ending we hoped for, but our guys accomplished so much these last few years together. I’m proud of the guys’ effort and enthusiasm this season. We approached this season as a season to just have fun playing baseball and we did just that.”
