At the Feb. 6 meeting of the Magee Board of Aldermen the board heard a presentation from Mitchell Tate of Core and Main on automatic meter readers.
Tate talked about the progression of meter reading and the new drive-by capabilities of accurately reading the meter. Tate said the new electric meters are accurate and come with a 20-year guarantee. He told the board that the older mechanical meters the city is currently using get worn out over time leading to malfunctions and inaccurate readings in favor of the customer. No action was taken following discussion.
Zoning Director Penny Aguirre announced that the City received a grant from CMPDD which will provide two interns for the city. Two students will be available to help and learn from the city employees. Aguirre said the CMPDD property maintenance app has been completed and shared steps with the board on how to install the apps.
Aguirre presented that she and Fire Marshall Charlie Valadie visited with residents at the mobile home park near the City Park and documented many ongoing issues pertaining to life, safety, fire, property maintenance, and zoning. She has since contacted the owner of the park and said they are eager to work with the city to make the area safer and more attractive. She supplied the complaints to the owner and the first steps taken will be to remove the illegal RVs from the park.
Aguirre followed up on informing the apartment complexes in the city on bulk trash, debris, and furniture pickups by the city crew. She said the managers of the properties that have responded have agreed to work with the city on any issues.
She closed with an update on repairs at the Community House. Aguirre said the roof, siding, walls, and HVAC have all been installed. Allison Berch and Aguirre received a quote to install LED lights instead of fluorescent lights that will cost the city $1,266.
Charlie Valadie spoke to the board concerning Severe Weather Awareness Week. The week feature awareness on different weather events. Valadie said the city’s sirens have been tested and malfunctions have been fixed. He also discussed updates to the system in the future.
Jimmy Zilla reported 141 youth have signed up for baseball. Zilla also reported on the rental of the fields by local teams. Rental will be $500 per year for non-local teams and $250 per year for local teams.
Reports were given on progress at the airport by Dusty Drennan. The airport board will meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month.
Fire Chief Buck Craft said 19 fire calls were received for the month of January. He also said fire inspections have begun around the city and they will continue. They will make a point to inspect every business in the city. Inspections and reports will be submitted to the rating bureau. Craft said the city hydrants will be tested and painted throughout the year.
The board entered executive session to discuss personnel before adjourning the meeting.
