Saturday, January 6, at 10:30 a.m. and noon. Hezekiah Watkins' Gallery Talk. Join us at the Two Mississippi Museums each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and noon with Hezekiah Watkins. Watkins will tell his story of being arrested as the youngest Freedom Rider at the Greyhound Bus Station in Jackson, Mississippi. This recurring event will take place in the This Little Light of Mine Gallery of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and is open to the public with the price of admission.
Saturday, January 13, 10 a.m. at Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. Bird Count at Grand Village. Join us for a Bird Count at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians (GVNI). Upon registering in the visitor center on the day of the event, participants will receive forms and instructions for recording, documenting, and verifying the various bird species encountered during their self-guided tour of the site. The participant with the most verified bird species documented during the count will be awarded a Mississippi Mound Trail mug, t-shirt, and bird woodcarving created by artist John Parfait.
Completed Bird Count forms must be returned to the GVNI visitor center in person or by emailing info@natchezgrandvillage.com by 4 p.m. that day. Monday, January 15, 6 p.m. at the Two Mississippi Museums. MLK Night of Culture. Join us for the annual MLK Night of Culture. Hosted by local Jackson artist 5th Child, this year's theme honors the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer. Artists will perform original pieces centered on freedom, voting rights, and education. This program is free and open to the public. FedEx is sponsoring free admission to the Two Mississippi Museums Saturday, January 13, through Monday, January 15, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Wednesday, January 17, at noon. History Is Lunch. Bobby J. Smith III will discuss his book, Food, Power, Politics: The Food Story of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums. Copies of the book will be available for sale with a signing to follow.
Sunday, January 21, at 2 p.m. at the Two Mississippi Museums. Sunday Screening of Fannie Lou Hamer's America. Join us for a Sunday Screening of Fannie Lou Hamer’s America in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums. Directed by Joy Davenport, this film tells the story of Fannie Lou Hamer’s pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. There will be a Q&A with Joy Davenport and Monica Land, Fannie Lou Hamer's niece, following the screening.

Readers are invited to tune in with Suzanne Marrs, Eudora Welty's friend and biographer, for an online discussion of Eudora Welty's short story collection, A Curtain of Green and Other Stories. Friday, March 1. 2024 MDAH Research Fellowship Opportunities Deadline. MDAH is accepting applications for the 2024 Eudora Welty Research Fellowship, 2024 Medgar and Myrlie Evers Research Fellowship, and inaugural Religion in Mississippi History Fellowship. The competitive scholarships may be used for research at MDAH for a minimum of two weeks during the summer of 2024. Applications are due by Friday, March 1, 2024.
