For the second year in a row Simpson County will be represented in the Super Bowl.
Simpson County native Martinas Rankin is an offensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. He joined the Chiefs in a trade from the Houston Texans earlier this season. He was drafted by the Texans in the third round last year and played in all 16 games on the Texans’ offensive line mixing in at guard and tackle.
Rankin served as an intriguing prospect for the Chiefs throughout the season. He continued to show improvement as the season progressed and was a bright spot on the Chiefs’ offensive line. He started five games this season before a season ending knee injury. He played a pivotal role in helping the Chiefs achieve key victories that have led to their appearance in Super Bowl LIV.
Rankin’s appearance with the Chiefs comes after Khadarel Hodge was featured in Super Bowl LIII as a member of the Los Angeles Rams. Rankin still holds true to his roots, and has repeatedly given a shout out to Mendenhall High School, which helped lay the foundation to his NFL career.
Rankin worked hard during his early days as a football player, and would often stay after practice for extra reps. He continued to excel and grow as a player, quickly becoming an anchor for the Mendenhall Tigers’ offensive line, due in large part to his work ethic.
Rankin finished his career at Mendenhall and received offers from several junior colleges and Mississippi Valley State. He signed with Gulf Coast Community College, where he had an impressive two seasons. He was awarded All-American and All-State honors.
The Academic-All American then decided to keep his talents in the state of Mississippi and attend Mississippi State University. He started as a tackle for the Bulldogs, and his impressive play warranted national attention. He was high on draft boards and would eventually be taken by the Texans in the third round.
Rankin’s story has been one of overcoming adversity, which is what he faces as he battles back from injury and gets set to take the field next season. His NFL career is young, but several coaches have been enamored with Rankin’s potential to be a great offensive lineman.
Simpson County is proud of Martinas Rankin and proud to be represented by a high quality young man in Super Bowl LIV.
