The Mendenhall Police Department was able to purchase five brand new body armor vests, thanks to a $5,000 Department of Justice grant.
Sergeant Allen Moore explained that the federally funded $5,000 JAG grant is issued once a year and departments have to specify the equipment that is needed. The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control drug trafficking, drug related crime, and violent crime. Based on their own local needs and conditions, agencies are provided with the flexibility to prioritize and place Justice funds where they are needed most. JAG funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice.
There was a need for new body armor within the department. Moore said, “We are very happy to receive these vests and upgrade our equipment. These vests will protect our officers and help keep us safe.”
Police Chief Candy McCullum said the Department of Justice JAG grants have been a great asset to the police department and City of Mendenhall. The grants have helped offset the cost of upgrading equipment.
This is the third JAG grant that the city has been awarded. Since becoming involved with the program the Police Department has been able to upgrade the automatic fingerprint identification system (AFIS) and purchase handheld breathalyzers, Tasers, and now new body armor; all of which was an estimated cost of $16,800.
