I’ve been in Boston this week attending the Evangelical Theological Society annual meeting, where professors and pastors gather to deliver high-falutin’ papers on topics that would numb the average brain.

Which is to say, they numb mine.

Anxiety is part of the human condition. It’s the biggest source of mental illness in the U. S. The National Institute of Mental Health says 19.1 percent of Americans suffered from anxiety disorder in the past year. More than 10 percent take medications for it.
Thankfully, I’m not one of them but I have anxiety. My anxiety stems from a profound sense of history. For most of human existence life has been nasty, brutish and short.
I was sitting in my regular pew at the Covenant Presbyterian Church recently, when Pastor Josh Cole read a passage from 2 Kings.

Our state lawmakers set and follow strict rules, our Gaming Commission keeps a close eye on operations, and our casinos and sportsbooks give back to the communities where they do business. President Trump made news a few weeks ago by encouraging pregnant women not to take Tylenol, or any pain reliever containing the drug acetominophen.
The president claimed acetominophen used during pregnancy can cause infants to develop autism. Reputable studies have not confirmed such a link. But a column on The Washington Post website said federal officials could do a better job of protecting maternal and child health if they would focus on a risky drug whose use is rising among pregnant women: marijuana.

Several subjects for this week’s column:

The latest federal government shutdown lasted 48 days, the longest in history. No doubt this was a hardship on many federal workers, but if you had 48 days worth of money saved, it was a 48-day paid vacation.
The federal workers who were furloughed during the 48 days will be reimbursed for back pay.
So for those who think these shutdowns save taxpayer money, think again.
