Realities of today’s international conflicts purposely intruded on MSO’s Bravo I concert on Saturday, October 4, as it focused on Russian/Ukrainian repertoire. Two historically important Russian composers, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff, were paired with two recent Ukrainian composers, Valentin Silvestrov and Myroslav Skoryk. Maestro Crafton Beck’s programming was inspirational with Silvestrov’s “Prayer for Ukraine” providing a beautiful, introspective moment to begin the concert.

News that Prince Andrew has relinquished the title Duke of York and membership of the Order of the Garter might surprise the uninformed — providing greater reason to read “Entitled:”
The downside of fame and fortune appears uppermost in Andrew Lownie’s explosive biography “Entitled” — a gossipy book providing variation on a theme of tabloid journalism.
The biography makes a stronger case for republicanism than any academic study might. Members of the Commonwealth of Nations are unlikely to support the Royal Family after observing how unsympathetic the royals can be.

I am an immigrant. I entered this country at an official entry station with the required paperwork and thus was given the privilege of being allowed to live here. If I didn't have the proper paperwork I would have been "undocumented." And if I had succeeded in entering at some unofficial point along the border I would have broken our immigration laws and would be termed an "undocumented alien." Let's be quite clear: undocumented immigrants are law breakers.

Texas has been the envy of economic developers in the south, more than doubling its population since 1980. In comparison, Mississippi’s population has grown 17 percent since 1980. Over the last 45 years, Texas has grown seven times faster than Mississippi.
I asked ChatGPT why. The main answer is that Texas has big urban areas and Mississippi has small rural areas. Over the last 45 years, big urban areas have grown while rural areas have shrunk. Basically, the rich get richer.

We’d dig out Mom and Dad’s old clothes and parade around in our high heels and party dresses or wingtips and suitcoats. We played teachers or doctors, cowboys or movie stars — grownups.
We pretended to be adults, “smoking” our candy cigarettes and “drinking” our Grapettes in fancy glasses, thinking that made us look older.
Kids used to want to grow up and get on their own. We were excited by our first jobs and first paychecks. We all assumed we’d marry and start families and most of us did.
