College golf takes center stage this weekend at Fallen Oak, the Beau Rivage casino’s hidden treasure in the otherwise sleepy community of Saucier, a few miles from the sandy beaches of Gulfport and Biloxi.

There, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss will combine to host the 14-team Fallen Oak Invitational, which in just three years has become one of the most prestigious fall college golf tournaments in America. Fourteen teams, including eight from the SEC and three from the Big 10 Conference, will compete.

Remember the tariff debates that dominated Washington just a few months ago? For a while it was the only thing anyone seemed to talk about.

The news media are full of stories about Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s attack on vaccination programs. He has cancelled $500 million in funding for mRNA research, the kind that produced the Covid vaccine. He has put antivaxers in charge of important programs at the Centers for Disease Control, and fired the CDC leader when she refused to promise to accept their recommendations without regard to their scientific validity. His attack is a potential threat to the existence of childhood vaccines.

Now it’s me dragging her out of bed every Sunday morning. I have gotten so much from regular church attendance, I can’t imagine life without it. It is a fundamental part of being a Christian.

Homecoming football games and the festivities that surround them are supposed to be times of celebration and community bonding, even if the home team loses.

In three small Mississippi towns and at two colleges over this past weekend, homecomings took on a nightmarish aspect because of what has become the all-too-familiar eruption of gunfire.

The five seemingly unrelated shootings over less than 24 hours produced 10 deaths and injured at least 15 others, not to mention the dozens if not hundreds who were traumatized by what they witnessed.
