The Rebels stayed hot. Mississippi State fell just short of an upset. And Southern Miss bounced back.

In 2014 when both of the Magnolia State’s SEC teams were rocking, Sports Illustrated coined the phrase, “Mississippi Mayhem.”

It was in early October in 2014 that Ole Miss upset No. 3 Alabama, and Mississippi State knocked off No. 6 Texas A&M, both at home, on the same fall Saturday.

It’s been about a month and a half now since some Simpson County parents bid their kids goodbye and sent them off for their freshman year in college.
Some did that with a hardy handshake or a hug and a “Good luck, son. See you at Thanksgiving.” Then Dad goes back to mowing the lawn and Mom goes back to stuffing the last load of wet towels into the washer. Life goes on.

I was a little skeptical when I was handed our reading selection for the September meeting of the Magee Books-n-Lunch Club. The title wasn’t “adult”— A Monster Calls. It was a thinner book, much shorter than our usual 300+ pages. Thumbing through, I saw illustrations on almost every page, like a children’s picture book.
“It’s a YA book,” our librarian announced, as if that would make us feel better about this departure from our usual fare.
YA stands for Young Adult, a poliltically correct term for “teenager,” a stage of life I barely remember.

With apologies to all the rest, the best and most meaningful college football rivalry involving a Mississippi team has been the one that matches Ole Miss against LSU. Historically, nothing else comes close.

The two teams play again Saturday at Oxford. Both are undefeated. Both have looked like FBS playoff teams. LSU is ranked No. 4, and Ole Miss is ranked No. 13. Surprisingly, at least to this column, Ole Miss is favored, albeit by the slimmest of margins.

Remember?

For a while there, both Mississippi State and Ole Miss both ranked among the nation’s top three football teams. State, coached by Dan Mullen, was No. 1. Ole Miss, coached by Hugh Freeze, was No. 3. At one point, both teams were a perfect 7-0. The college football world was astonished. Actually, so were most of us Mississippians. No, it didn’t last, but wasn’t it fun while it did?
