It looks like a carnival shell game. The pea is the Mississippi Public Service Commission (PSC). The hustler is the Legislature. Entergy is the barker. Economic development boosters are the shills. And the marks (suckers) are Mississippi families and small businesses. Who palmed the pea?

One of Mississippi’s many stubborn problems is that too many of its babies keep dying, and nothing has stopped that for the past decade. By some measures, it’s getting worse.
The Mississippi Today website reported last week that an increase in the infant mortality rate prompted the state Department of Health to declare a public health emergency. In 2024, the state reported its highest rate of infant deaths in over a decade.

Northside Sun outdoor columnist Jeff North stopped by to see me just as I was running up against my column deadline.
After chatting for 30 minutes, I told him I really had to get to work writing, “What are you going to write about this week,” he asked. “I think I’m going to write about what you’ve just told me.”
What Jeff told me was not good news. He said that after 47 years in the business, he’s never seen Mississippi farmers in such bad shape. “It’s a bloodbath.” He predicted 20 percent of Mississippi farmers will be pushed out of business.
