Columnist Sid Salter says for generations, the Neshoba County Fair has served as the lively annual hub of politics, community, and culture.

Since 1896, when Mississippi Gov. Anselm Joseph McLaurin of Brandon traveled by train from Jackson to Newton and then closed the distance to the fairgrounds by horse and buggy, every politician who held that office has attended at least one session of the historic campground fair.

The USA Today college football coaches poll is out. Texas is ranked No. 1, defending champion Ohio State is No. 2, Ole Miss is 15th, and nine SEC teams are ranked in the Top 25. Now then, what all this means is…

…absolutely nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch.

Seems like we could at least wait until Texas and Ohio State square off later this month to rank one team higher than the other or to rank any team at all for that matter. Preseason college football polls are about as meaningful as a politician’s promise, which is to say, not at all.

Our very fact challenged president met with the UK prime minister in Scotland on July 28. I watched it live on TV. Summary and rebuttal of some of his "facts.”
Japan has been totally closed to the United States. I opened it up.
No, Commodore Perry did that in 1858. Just in 2024 Japan imported 85 billion from US. Yes, US bought more from Japan, but that is not a bad thing. We didn't have to do that. The reason we did was because it gave the most bang for the buck for the stuff bought.
The European Union has been closed to the United States, too.

Why are Entergy’s rates for Amazon secret? Entergy says because that’s the way things work. When you’re dealing with a really big customer who wants rates to be secret, rates are secret. You know, trade secret and competitive advantage issues. That’s understandable. If you’re Amazon and your data center energy efficiency is better or worse than Meta’s, or Google’s, or Microsoft’s, you don’t want them to know. That’s a legitimate business reason for secret rates.

If Shad White and Lynn Fitch are both invited to any upcoming Republican Party banquets, they made it clear again last week that it will be best to seat them at different tables.
White, the state auditor, recently released his annual Audit Exceptions Report. He also used it to tweak Fitch, the attorney general, for what he believes is a blatant unwillingness to go to court to enforce certain Audit Department payment demands.

Several shout outs today. The first is to my accountant of three decades, Tony Huffman who ran three races in four days to become a national champion in the USA Track and Field Masters.
In fact, he’s a two-time masters champion now, winning two gold medals in Huntsville, Ala. One gold medal was for the 5,000 meter (3.1) miles. The other gold medal was for the 10,000 meter (6.2 miles.) Tony also placed 7th in the 1,500 meter race, which isn’t even his sweet spot.
