A couple of days ago I watched the magnificent DC parade celebrating the 250th anniversary of the US army. It depicted the early days of the Revolutionary War; continuing through the battles of the Civil War; the World Wars I and II and so on. The outfits of the soldiers in each segment were meticulously displayed. Finally, the evening concluded with a startling fireworks exhibition. It is telling that in the hours before it started Governor Tim Waltz of Minnesota said he hoped it would rain on the parade. It didn't.

It didn’t take long to get an irate call from Entergy Mississippi president Haley Fisackerly. The Northside Sun print edition gets delivered on Friday. I got a voicemail by Friday morning. Nice to be noticed.
The voicemail was in response to a column I wrote last week claiming that the Amazon data center in Madison County was going to be really bad news for Entergy residential ratepayers. — maybe an extra $1,000 a year or so in the not-too-distant future.

It’s a strong headline for a column: “This tax testifies to the utter corruption of conservative thought.” Unfortunately, this one, on The Washington Post website, rings true.
Columnist Matt Bai, writing about the One Big, Beautiful Bill now in the Senate, points to one of its many elements as evidence that the Republican Party has strayed too far from its history as a trust-the-people, let-the-free-market-decide political organization.

Having passed my 29th birthday—several times—I’m spending more time these days thinking about getting old, and I’m not so sure I want to do it. My last column in which I shared my dismay at those pesky Senior Moments. So I’ve been reading about ways to stay young longer and trying to put these ideas into practice.

Eight months ago, the first week of October 2024, J.J. Spaun walked the lush fairways of Country Club of Jackson in the Sanderson Farms Championship, trying to unlock the incomprehensible secret of winning golf. His stay in the Capital City was brief. He shot a first-round 75 and then withdrew from the tournament, presumably due to an injury.

“Presumably” is used here because Spaun’s withdrawal was not newsworthy enough to warrant even the briefest of investigations as to why he chose to drop out. After all, he ranked 98th on the tour’s earnings list at the time.

The list of big ideas being considered in Washington that could affect Mississippi seems to keep growing. At the top of the list is President Trump’s One Big, Beautiful Bill, which is being considered in the Senate while the House amends its version to keep it from being subject to a filibuster.
There may be things to like in the bill, such as keeping Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent. But some of its proposals could kick real sand in the face of America’s poorest state.

Mississippians who are uncomfortable with the state recognizing Confederate Memorial Day as a holiday have options.

The state’s about 300 municipalities and 82 counties do not have to recognize the holiday. They can replace it with another holiday, such as the June 19 nationally observed Juneteenth, which commemorates the freedom of African Americans, or with a Mardi Gras holiday or with various other holidays.
