People moving to Mississippi since 1998 might not know Deposit Guaranty Bank, which was Mississippi’s dominant financial institution for decades.
Deposit Guaranty opened on Monday June 15, 1925, 100 years ago. Families who were pillars of the bank surrounded me from birth.
The last CEO was my neighbor Bud Robinson — previously my family’s neighbor from my teenage years. Bud lent the 50th anniversary history to me in late April 2023.

America lost a gentle giant in journalism when Stanley Nelson, who investigated some of the nation’s most notorious racially motivated slayings in Mississippi and Louisiana, died unexpectedly last week. He was 69.

CBC reporter David Ridgen, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and podcast host, worked with the reporter for years. “Stanley Nelson is the best of us,” he said. “A doer. Not a reminiscer. A teller. Not someone to leave anyone behind. A brotherly guy who you’d trust anything to.”

I often talk with people who say they wish they could read more. Usually, it’s, “I really want to read, but I don’t have time,” which is actually true for most folks. Few of us have whole afternoons or nights to devote to finishing War and Peace in a week.
My friends who say they don’t have time to read are like my friends who say they don’t have time to exercise — perhaps they just don’t want to do it. They believe the activity is valuable, but they content themselves by planning to do it — later.
