Mississippi has added over 78,000 jobs in the last decade, and nearly 50,000 since pre-COVID highs. The success is reflected in an economy with the second highest growth rate in the country last quarter.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers released Tuesday show Mississippi with nearly 1.25 million workers. By itself, the figure may not mean much, but looking back, it demonstrates positive growth in a state that historically struggles to get people off the sidelines and into jobs.

Mother’s Day almost slipped up on me this month, and I had to rush to buy a card and get it to my last surviving aunt in time for the day honoring wonderful mothers, grandmothers and aunts.
If you aren’t an early card buyer, you may miss out on the best ones because Mother’s Day is traditionally the top card- buying holiday of the year.
I almost did this column for Mother’s Day two weeks ago, because the book I’m suggesting that you put under your reading lamp, White Oleander by Janet Fitch, is about a mother-daughter relationship, which would have been timely.

It is a sad sign of the times that an explosion at a building, such as the one reported this past weekend in California, does not cause the shock that it once would have. These attacks happen too often; most of us are numb to them, sometimes even when people are killed.
Because of that, the true oddity of last weekend’s blast outside a fertility clinic is that lawmen reported afterward that the suspect, who died in the explosion, believed that because life inevitably involves suffering, it is morally wrong to bring new life into existence.

As an Ole Miss Rebel, he was the MVP of both the Gator and Sugar Bowls. As an NFL rookie, he intercepted eight passes and returned two for touchdowns. As a coach, he won two national championships and two Super Bowl rings. He played for coaching legends John Vaught and Paul Brown, coached with the legendary Tom Landry. He is a member of seven different halls of fame.

And all that doesn’t even begin to tell the story of Clarksdale native and Ole Miss great Bobby Ray Franklin, a gentleman and a winner, who died Wednesday in his adopted hometown of Senatobia. He was 88.

Democrats are feeling optimistic about their chances of retaking control of at least one house of Congress in next year’s midterm elections.
The Democrats have two factors in their favor.
The party that controls the White House historically has lost seats in midterm elections, and Donald Trump’s low popularity ratings early in his second term would suggest that the Republican president could be a drag for GOP congressional candidates wherever the race is expected to be close.
