Among the best pieces of advice I have received came as I was nearing college graduation and deciding how to pursue a call to ministry. A trusted mentor, whose unexpected funeral I recently attended, advised me not to go straight to seminary but instead to take a year to “get my hands dirty.”
I took his advice literally and left my home in North Carolina to serve in a small Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the Mississippi Delta. This opportunity to love my neighbor was made possible by the AmeriCorps, our federal agency for national service.

In a rare show of near unanimity, the Mississippi House and Senate agreed to establish a task force to study implementation of “one-door access for state resources and services.” The bill explains: “An integrated system of workforce and social services may more effectively serve Mississippians in escaping poverty through targeted supports and work to achieve dignity and self-sufficiency and strengthen Mississippi's economy.”
That means moving more non-working people into jobs.

A golf trip and a wedding sent me to Nashville and Charleston, South Carolina on back-to-back weekends.
The golf trip to Nashville was a house warming conclave of Jackson’s Bushwood Golf Group (BGG) — a group of about 30 middle to old aged men who play at the three Randy Watkins golf courses.
My dear friend Kevin Russell, long one of Roger Parrott’s right-hand colleagues at Belhaven College moved there with wife Linda Kay, to be near daughter and son-in-law Emily and Matt and their beautiful new one-year old granddaughter Ruby.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves would say he had good reason to veto all eight pieces of legislation that he blocked this year from becoming law.
We certainly agree with his reasoning on at least one of these vetoes, which nixed the Legislature’s effort to update the state’s certificate of need laws.
The Republican governor, who philosophically is no fan of the CON laws because they limit competition among health-care providers, says he would have signed the legislation except for one amendment that was added by the Senate during the final days of the 2025 session.

An email from the leader of the Mississippi Center for Public Policy did a superb job of eviscerating the idea that tariffs are good for the American economy.
Douglas Carswell noted that a month ago, President Trump set a 10 percent “baseline tariff” on almost all imports. He then added “reciprocal tariffs” on most other countries with which the United States trades, but within a week suspended them for 90 days when financial markets turned sharply downward.

The mounting number of losses that Donald Trump has suffered in the courts since he returned to the White House with a blizzard of legally suspect executive orders is reminiscent of his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
Back then, he took the approach of just ignoring what dozens of court cases determined: namely, that there was no evidence of fraud significant enough to have cost him the election. He continues to this day peddling the lie that Joe Biden stole the election.

The Mississippi Legislature’s insistence of not requiring oversight has resulted in a way for private schools to “double dip,” or receive money from two separate state programs to educate the same handful of students.

There is currently no mechanism in state law to allow state officials to determine whether double dipping is occurring. More importantly, there is nothing in state law to prevent double dipping from occurring.
