Nancy, my wife, and I decided that a get- away for a few days might be just what the doctor ordered. Too often our schedule is dictated by others so we set last weekend as a get-away.
Nancy had booked it a while back. We had wanted to go to the Coast and went back and forth as to where we would like to go. As it turned out we decided to go to Gulf Shores. One of her favorite past times is lying on the beach. I can do that for a while, but I am not a marathon beach kind of guy.
The prices to stay in places like Gulf Shores have gone through the roof. The cheapest hotel room we could find was $400 plus a night so we opted to stay at Craft Farms, a place we stay when golfing. It is a little dated but is a good value. We had a two bedroom condo and decided to ask another couple, Jimmy and Kriste Mangum.
We got down just after lunch and decided to go to Acme Oyster House on the intercostal.
That was a pretty good way to start the trip. Afterward we decided to run down to Perdido and visit with my niece, whom we rarely get a chance to see. She directed us to one of the local hangouts and it ended up being pretty cool. We sat through the afternoon and visited with a former boss of mine who retired and moved to the Coast.
I cleared our tab three times before we finally decided to leave. No trip is complete without a stop by Florabama, and we were having a large time when someone suggested we had enough fun for one day. We headed to the condo and were back by 8:30. What a “wild” night we had. That was fine by me.
The next day we planned to hit the beach by 11:00, which gave plenty of time for breakfast and being leisurely.
The plan was to hang out until about 4:00 and go over to the Yatch Club and listen to the music. We left the beach at 5:00 and went to the Yacht Club across the road. We ordered appetizers, all with a Greek flair. When I tell you one was enough for four people it was and we ordered three so we grazed until we could eat no more. Jimmy decided he was full and it was time to go to the house. I think we are going to travel with them more often because I was thinking the same thing but did not say it.
I don’t play nearly as hard as I used to but still like to have a bit of fun. This time we got back to the condo and it was still light. I know the girls were hoping to stay longer but I wanted to honor Jimmy’s request (yeah, right).
We got up on Sunday morning and decided it was time to head back home. Jimmy was having family over for a fish fry. My planned productive time for Sunday afternoon was anything but productive.
I took our dog Fisher out to play catch a bit and I was done. I think Nancy washed some clothes while I was snoozing in the recliner.
Wasn’t this the perfect way to spend a Mother’s Day?
