In a decisive outing last Friday the Simpson Academy Cougars fell at home to the visiting Parklane Academy Pioneers by a 48-19 margin.
Prior to the game the Cougars celebrated their Senior Night with a beautiful event that honored the seniors and their families.
Parklane came out fast, using a combination of efficient offense and stout defense to build an early lead. The Pioneers relied heavily on a potent running game. Simpson struggled to get into a rhythm, facing setbacks in both the running and passing game early in the first quarter, handing the Pioneers a 7-0 loead at the end of the first quarter.
Jacob Coulson scored quickly at the start of the second quarter busting a 23-yard touchdown run.
Simpson did not quit — the Cougars found bursts of momentum in the second quarter and into the second half, managing to reach the end zone multiple times and show flashes of their offensive potential. Coulson crossed the goal line for his second rushing score of the contest with 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter, trimming the lead to bring the score to 13-21.
Braxton Baldwin finished the first drive of the third quarter with a 2 yard rushing touchdown to make the score 19-21. However, Parklane’s early cushion and consistent pressure on defense kept the margin high and the Cougars from mounting a true comeback.
The Pioneers took control of the game from that point on, cruising to a final score of 48-19.
For Simpson Academy, the setback deepens the hole in their district mark: they entered the matchup winless in district competition and now must regroup quickly.
The loss means Simpson Academy faces a steeper climb in the coming weeks if they hope to salvage a late-season surge.
Key for the Cougars will be tightening the defense, creating more consistency on offense, and avoiding early game deficits.
There were moments worth building on for Simpson. The effort to fight back in the second half shows the will is there. But the team will need to rally quickly as the regular season draws to a close.
