Black History Month is a time to honor the courage, resilience, and achievements of those who paved the way for greater freedom, opportunity, and justice. Here in Mississippi, Black history is not just something we study—it is something we live. It is reflected in our churches, our classrooms, our HBCUs, and in families who sacrificed so the next generation could dream bigger and go further.
As a son of the Delta and a first-generation college graduate, I stand as a direct beneficiary of that enduring legacy. The doors opened for me were made possible by educators, civil rights leaders, and everyday citizens who believed in equity and invested in the promise of our communities.
Black History Month is timeless. It is not only about remembrance, but responsibility. We must continue the work by strengthening public education, supporting our historically Black colleges and universities, addressing healthcare disparities, and expanding economic opportunity across the Delta and the State of Mississippi.
Black history is American history. As we reflect on the progress made, let us recommit ourselves to building a more just, equitable, and prosperous future for every Mississippian.
Please enjoy and share my just released Black History video celebrating that “Black History is American History.”
