The Mississippi State Board of Education is collecting comments from the public through an online survey as they again search for a new State Superintendent.

The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) is once again in the midst of a search for the next State Superintendent of Education and is now seeking input from Mississippians across the Magnolia State.

The 2022 historic teacher pay raise has been largely negated by the impact of inflation, according to a new report.

Mississippi First, an education policy organization, published on Tuesday the findings from a survey of Mississippi educators, the second year they’ve done the study. Many of the findings echoed the results from the previous year, despite the passage of the historic pay raise that increased teacher salaries by an average of about $5,000.

All meetings are from 6 – 7 p.m. and no registration is required. Locations include Cleveland, Columbus, Richland, Jackson, Natchez, Moss Point, Yazoo City, Holly Springs and McComb.

Delta State provost stepping down

The provost of Delta State University suddenly stepped down Monday afternoon, according to an internal email obtained by Mississippi Today.

Andy Novobilski, who came to the regional college in the Mississippi Delta in 2021, will move into a faculty position as a tenured professor of computer information systems in the spring, wrote the new president, Daniel Ennis, in an email to faculty and staff.

Novobilski will also stay on as a special assistant to the president for the remainder of the school year.

Mississippi students reach pre-pandemic levels in state test results

Slightly more Mississippi students passed state tests than before the pandemic in nearly all grades, a result education leaders celebrated Thursday when test scores were released.

The Mississippi Academic Assessment Program measures student performance in English, math, science, and U.S. history. Results for the 2022-23 school year were released Thursday and showed the state average in most subjects increasing one or two percentage points since 2019. The U.S. history assessment was reworked during the pandemic, so pre-COVID comparisons are not available.

A slim majority of the governing board for Mississippi’s eight public universities voted to allow Elayne Hayes-Anthony, Jackson State University’s temporary acting president, to apply for the permanent role.

According to executive session minutes released Wednesday, seven trustees voted for the motion and five voted against, including Dr. Steven Cunningham, the only Jackson State alumnus on the board and the trustee who is leading the university’s presidential search.

Each year, more than 30,000 third graders in Mississippi gear up to take a statewide reading test, part of the state’s Literacy-Based Promotion Act.

A little more than 75 percent of those students passed the test on their first try earlier this year, according to the Mississippi Department of Education. They are among the thousands of children who started fourth grade this month.
