The Biden administration’s application for student loan forgiveness is officially open. The deadline to apply is Dec. 31, 2022.

Eligible borrowers, among them hundreds of thousands of Mississippians, could see their balances erased within four to six weeks if they apply today, according to the U.S. Department of Education, the federal agency overseeing the plan.

Eddie Lee Howard Jr. and Sherwood Brown each spent 26 years on Mississippi’s death row for murders they did not commit — only to walk free last year.

They are far from alone. They are two of 23 Black Mississippians who have been exonerated in recent decades. Four other exonerees were white.

On Friday, Oct. 14, during the Magee High School vs. Raleigh High School football game, a claim was made by a spectator who alleged to have overheard talk of a potential shooting threat.

The threat was made known to police officials on duty, followed by the evacuation of the stadium. After further investigation, no leads were found regarding the individuals who made the comments.

Due to the incident during Friday’s night game, Simpson County School District is working to improve its safety plans for all athletics games held on its school campuses.

Judge rules public funds to private schools is unconstitutional

A Hinds County judge ruled on Thursday that the state giving $10 million in pandemic relief funds to private schools for infrastructure improvements is unconstitutional.

The Legislature passed the bills appropriating this money at the end of the 2022 session in early April, a move that frustrated some advocates and legislators. The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which gave the Mississippi Legislature $1.8 billion to spend on pandemic response, government services, and infrastructure improvements to water, sewer, and broadband.

Lake player killed in shooting

Lake senior football player Travis Jones was apparently shot and killed on Thursday night, according to the coach's social media post Thursday night.

Scott County sheriff Mike Lee confirmed earlier in the night that a Lake senior was killed near the intersection of Old Highway 80 and Johnson Town Rd.

The incident is under investigation and being handled by the Scott County Sheriff's Office.

College board ’embarrassed’ by state of USM Gulf Park as enrollment has plummeted

Officials at the University of Southern Mississippi once considered Gulf Park, the oceanside satellite campus in Long Beach, a “secret weapon” for increasing enrollment at the smallest of the state’s top-tier research universities.

But last fall, just 1,040 students were pursuing a degree at Gulf Park — a more than 50% drop from 2,297 students in 2011, according to data from USM.
