Dianne McNair-Smith, owner of 3 Girls Trucking Academy in Magee, has become an entrepreneur, counselor, and landlord since the company began operations last year.
The academy provides training and testing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, a necessary for driving large transport trucks. On September 26, 2021, the business celebrated its first anniversary, and it continues to thrive and grow despite another wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Those from Simpson County and surrounding areas know that the community of Kennedy Springs is synonymous with Kennedy Springs Baptist Church located on MS-540 in the northeast end of the county. It seems that the church has been there “forever” and in a way, it has. Kennedy Springs celebrates 100 years of existence on October 5, 2021.

If there is one person who embodies the spirit of the Magee Trojan it is Magee High School volunteer Jeff Anderson. He spends his days there and assists where needed at the school and in sports, especially football. Anderson is characterized by those around him as nice, kind, sincere, caring, and servant leader.

Weeks after it banned COVID-19 vaccine mandates for the state’s colleges and universities, the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees voted Monday to direct employees to receive the vaccine.

This comes in response to an executive order from the Biden administration issued two nearly two months ago, which mandates employees of federal contractors get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Big changes could be coming to state financial aid in Mississippi for prospective college students. The Post-Secondary Board has recommended a proposal, called the “Mississippi One Grant,” that would replace the state’s three existing grants with a single program that would award aid based on a formula of need and merit.

How will you be affected? To help answer that, we used a data analysis by the Office of Student Financial Aid of the proposed grant to create the following calculator.

Ashmore, Pudas selected as Mr. & Miss Co-Lin

WESSON – Jonas Frank Pudas and Hattie Grace Ashmore, both of Magee, have been selected as Mr. & Miss Copiah-Lincoln Community College for the Simpson County Center. They were elected during a campus wide vote.

Pudas is the son of Matt and Beth Pudas of Magee. He is member of the Alpha Omega Bible Club, Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and Student Government Association. He was honored as the Outstanding Student in Automation and Control and was named to Who’s Who at Co-Lin.

It was late at night in December 2018 when Andy Flores discovered an opportunity that would change his life.

The senior at Ocean Springs High School was searching the internet for college scholarships when he came across a result for an aid program on the website for Mississippi’s Office of Student Financial Aid. The description said the program paid for all four years of college.

College board ups state’s share of MSU President Mark Keenum’s salary under new contract

The Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees announced on Thursday it had unanimously voted to renew Mark Keenum’s contract as president of Mississippi State University for another four years to 2025.

Keenum’s salary will remain $800,000 per year, matching University of Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boyce as Mississippi’s highest paid college president.

Box Drop Mattress, the newest member of the Magee Chamber, held a ribbon cutting event Thursday. They are located next to China Buffet at 1700 Simpson County Highway 49 Suite 6. The business is owned and operated by Dean Phipps.

Mendenhall Public Library has undergone a shift in power the last month with all three of its employees resigning to take positions elsewhere outside the library system.
But new branch manager Kathie Jo Ward is anything but a newbie.
Ward has been with the Central Mississippi Regional Library System (CMRLS) for several years now, working as the branch manager at Harrisville Library and Children’s Assistant at Magee Library. She loved both jobs but gave up only one to become Mendenhall’s branch manager.

New Owners of Sears store host ribbon cutting!

Trey and Regina Day are the new owners of the local Sears franchise located on Highway 49 South in Magee. The Magee Chamber of Commerce greeted the Days with a ribbon cutting last week. Lee Maddox, Chamber president, presented Sears with their membership at the ribbon cutting.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and during this time domestic violence shelters worldwide are raising awareness of the dramatic and often deadly experiences of victims of domestic violence.
Angel Wings Out-Reach Center has been providing emergency temporary shelter and victim services to individuals who are seeking a way of escape from their abuser. Located in Simpson County, the shelter has been a continuing lifeline for hundreds of victims of domestic violence for 27 years.

State school board association denounces national group’s request for federal assistance to protect educators

The Mississippi School Board Association is making it known it had no part in the National School Board Association’s request for federal assistance to protect school board members, students and educators from threats and harassment over issues such as mask-wearing and critical race theory.

The Mississippi School Board Association (MSBA) Board of Directors will also consider whether it will leave the national group at its November meeting, according to MSBA Executive Director Denotris Jackson.

Bluegrass in the Park

Friends of Clarkco is excited to have their annual Bluegrass in the Park at Clarkco State Park on October 23. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and last until 8:00 p.m.
They have a variety of singers lined up to perform: Bounds and Determined with its seven time champion fiddle player, King Mountain Band, Patchwork String Band, Hylton Tyler Overstreet, and Rhonda Kelly.
The event only costs $2 per person to enter, and Friends of Clarkco anticipates a great response from the community for the event.
