The Simpson Academy Cougars celebrated Senior Night last Friday as they took on the Park Place Christian Academy Crusaders. The Cougars won the game convincingly with a final score of 35-19.
The Cougars started the game with a good defensive stance giving their offense excellent field position. A rollout pass from Brentley Berry was good for a 38 yard gain by Bryce Jensen. The Jensen completion set up a quick swing pass to Tyler Stanford for a touchdown.
The Cougars remained sound defensively throughout the first quarter. The Crusaders were once again forced to punt the ball on their second drive. However a miscue on the long snap saw the ball sail over the punter’s head. The Cougars took over on the Crusaders’ 20 yard line. A three play drive led to another touchdown, thanks to a designed quarterback run for Berry, who broke a tackle and made other defenders miss in route to the end zone.
The Cougar secondary was stingy. The Crusaders struggled to get their passing attack going, which led to another punt. The Cougar defense played with energy and speed, which led to big plays. Simpson Academy continued to play complimentary football. Carter Cockrell punched in a touchdown midway through the second quarter to give his team a 21-0 lead.
The Crusaders were able to score late in the second quarter after capitalizing on a short field after a Berry interception. Simpson Academy led 21-7 entering halftime. The strong first quarter set the tone, and they cruised to a 35-19 victory.
The Cougars improved to a 4-5 overall record, and are currently 2-2 in district play. This Friday the Cougars will hit the road and face the undefeated Leake Academy Rebels.
