The Mendenhall Tigers won their second game in a row with a 25-8 win over Northeast Jones.
The Tigers jumped out on Northeast Jones with a 19 point first quarter. Everything was crisp offensively, and the defense played with an edge and confidence. The offensive line was great in protection, afforded the quarterback time to throw, and opened running lanes for the backs.
DK Jenkins and his favorite target Walter “No-No” Owens were in sync like never before. Both of these young players set new career highs. Jenkins completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Jenkins also enjoyed his best rushing performance to date as the Tigers starting quarterback. Jenkins carried the ball 8 times for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Owens has been a bright young star that the Tigers have relied heavily upon since his freshman year. This season he has shown the ability to be a big time playmaker and that was on display once again last Friday night. Owens registered six catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns.
Reggie McLaurin was reliable as always and had six carries for 39 yards and a touchdown.
The defense played with aggression and was happy to have middle linebacker Isaiah Drummond back on the field. Drummond led the team in tackles with 12 and was followed by Mylin Jenkins with 11. The defense was persistent and opportunistic forcing two turnovers on the night.
Once again the Tigers played a complete game of complimentary football and it led to the blowout victory.
The win also ensured a playoff berth for the Tigers. The Tigers are currently 2-2 in their district, which is good for third place.
This Friday the Tigers will host the Quitman Panthers for the final game of the regular season. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the Tigers will be celebrating Senior Night.
