Cornelius Jerome Jones

Today we mourn the passing of long time Simpson County resident and community leader Mr. Cornelius Jerome Jones (Aug. 12, 1944 - Oct. 11, 2018), beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and Civil Rights Veteran.  Mr. Jones passed on Thursday, October 11, in Mendenhall, MS.  He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Esta P.


Nancy Winstead Craven

Nancy Winstead Craven, 86, of Magee, Mississippi, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. She was born Monday, December 28, 1931.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018, from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Magee.


Dr. Audrey Berry

Dr. Audrey Berry passed away at her residence on Friday, October 12, 2018, at the age of 80, in Scooba, MS.  She was born on September 28, 1938, to her parents, the late Robert and Esther Ellen (Wear) Partain, in Spiro, OK.

Dr. Berry, along with her late husband, had a long- time Chiropractic Clinic in Magee for many years.


Bobby Carroll Grantham

Bobby Carroll Grantham, 76, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the University of MS Medical Center in Jackson. Visitation was Saturday, October 13, from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. with the funeral service at First Baptist Church of Braxton. Burial followed at Braxton Cemetery.


Mary Nell Grantham

Mary Nell Grantham, 74, of Harrisville passed away on October 9, 2018.

Visitation was held on October 11, 2018, at the New Covenant Church in Harrisville.  Funeral services were held  October 12, 2018, at New Covenant Church with  burial following in Harrisville Cemetery.


Juanita Parish

Juanita Parish, 74, of Mount Olive, died Friday, October 12, 2018, at Hattiesburg Health and Rehab.

Visitation was held on Sunday, October 14, 2018, from 5 p.m. until 8p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mt. Olive.



Vida Whitley

Vida Whitley, 87, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018. She was born Friday, March 27, 1931.

Visitation was held on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home Magee.


Diane Spikes

Diane Spikes, 72, of Pinola, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at Magee General Hospital. She was born on April 7, 1946, to the late Cecil A. and Irene C. (Sullivan)  Spikes. 

Diane was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family and her church family.

SCA Cougars take down Columbia

 

The SCA Cougars traveled to Columbia Academy on Friday with a tilt with the Cougars of Columbia. Simpson received the opening kick but were not able to get anything going and were forced to punt. The Simpson defense was suffocating all night and set the tone early with a three and out by Columbia.


Lady Cougars advance to Overall

Simpson’s softball team advanced to the MAIS AAAA Overall Championship series Monday at the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex. The Lady Cougars defeated Oak Forest Academy 5-1 on Saturday in the opening round of the tournament. The Lady Cougars played East Rankin Academy in the semifinals and lost 6-4 in 11 innings.

School board delays election

After years of complying with restrictive hiring practices, the Simpson County School Board has issued payment to the law firm of Adams and Reese in conjunction with settlement of the court ordered consent decree from which the county has finally been released.

Robbery suspects held

On January 3, 2018, at approximately 9:57 p.m. , the manager of Wards Restaurant in Magee reported to the Magee Police Department via 911 that they had been robbed at gunpoint by a man who had taken an undisclosed amount of cash from the business. The suspect had then fled from the store. 



Body found and identified

At approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 20, the Magee Police Department responded to a call describing a dead body near the Highway 28 West and Highway 49 intersection.

Assistant Chief Joey Womack explained that a body was lying in the road not far from the CEFCO and Texaco service stations.

2017 Year in Review

Simpson County saw both highs and lows during the year 2017. New faces went into office and new members went onto boards. We have seen triumph in high school sporting teams who dominated the competition, but we also saw tragedy with armed robberies and crime throughout the county.
