Arrest Reports 7-18-2019

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 20 arrests from July 8 to July 15.

The SCSO reported the following additional arrests: DUI 1st (7), warrant (4), DUI 1st (3), ATV on road, stalking, possession of paraphernalia, taking motor vehicle, fleeing, and domestic violence.

9U Baseball Boys

Magee 9U All Stars are Cal Ripken MS State Champs and SouthWest Regional Champs! They will compete in the Cal Ripken 9U World Series in Treasure Coast, Fla., August 3-11,.

WNV case reported

Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports its first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2019. The reported case is in Smith County.

In 2018, Mississippi had 50 WNV cases and no deaths. The first case was reported in mid-July.

HElping hands

Bettie Marie Everett Little

Early Saturday morning, July 13, 2019, Bettie Marie Everett Little, peacefully passed from this life for her eternal home.  She was born on November 18, 1926, in Magee to Anslem Sylvester and Claudie Annette Rankin Everett.  On December 30, 1931, there was a tornado off Pine Grove Road.  Annette was running for cover to a storm shelter with her


Lucile R. Forrest

Lucile R. Forrest, 89, of McComb, Miss., passed into Jesus’ arms on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at McComb Nursing Home and Rehab. She was born Friday, November 8, 1929 in Mt. Olive, Miss.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home Magee.

Mary McCoy Harris Hartley

Mary McCoy Harris Hartley, age 90, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019.  She was born on February 16, 1929, a daughter of the late Claude Sylvester and Laura Bell Jones McCoy. 

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, A. J. Harris, and husband of 7 years, John Hartley; six brothers and four sisters.

Kathleen Knight Patrick

Kathleen Knight Patrick, 95, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019, at Arrington Living Center in Collins, where she had been a resident for seven years. She was born on July 20, 1923, to S. J. and Essie Marie Miley Knight in Simpson County.

Felicia Diane Canoy

Felicia Diane Canoy passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2019.  She was born on December 28, 1984.

Survivors include her parents, Luther and Diane Canoy; beloved grandparents, John and Mary E. Hughes; brother, Johnny Canoy; sisters Stacy Canoy, Leann Roberts, Mary Nolan, Rita Jasper, Tammie Dreding, Pamela Tanner and Laura Hudson.

Jerry Purser

Jerry Purser, 64, of Magee, gained his wings Wednesday July 10, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg. He was born Thursday, September 16, 1954.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee.

Harold Glenn Creason

Harold Glenn Creason, 74, of Mendenhall, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, in Mendenhall. He was born Monday, April 30, 1945.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mendenhall.

James Yelverton

James Yelverton passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019, at Magee General Hospital.  He was born on January 28, 1939, to James Albert Yelverton Jr. and Marie (Maddox) Yelverton Ware.

James worked for over 40 years with Illinois Central Gulf Railroad before retiring.  He was a lifelong member of Sharon Presbyterian Church.

Gladys Ainsworth Martin

Gladys Ainsworth Martin, 106, of Magee, passed from this life Thursday July 4, 2019, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Magee. She was born Saturday, October 5, 1912.

Visitation was held on Sunday, July 7, 2019, from 12 noon until 2: p.m. at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee.

Michael May

Michael May, 65, formally of Magee, passed from this life Sunday, July 7, 2019, at Jaquith Nursing Home in Pearl, Miss. He was born Wednesday, August 19, 1953.

Jewel Barlow

Mrs. Jewel Tucker Barlow, 92, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus, on the morning of Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at home with her loved ones. The family  received friends for visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at Harrisville Baptist Church in Harrisville. Burial followed at Harrisville Cemetery.


Home invasion thwarted


The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call that came in at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, August 23.

 The incident was described by investigator Leon Wedgeworth as a home invasion that occurred at a residence on Van Zandt Road in Braxton.


School board delays election

After years of complying with restrictive hiring practices, the Simpson County School Board has issued payment to the law firm of Adams and Reese in conjunction with settlement of the court ordered consent decree from which the county has finally been released.
