An active homicide investigation is underway in Simpson County. A press release from the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department provides details of a shooting occurring Sunday morning shortly after midnight on R T Lake Road in Mendenhall.

Hilda Darlene Thompson, 63, of Pearl, passed from this life Thursday, October 31, 2019, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 4, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee.
The burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery.
River Ann Catherine Lucas passed away on September 28, 2019, at the age of 5 months. She was born on April 1, 2019.
She is survived by her parents, James Lucas and Shelley Waddell Lucas, and siblings, Lily, Evan, Rainey and Colton McDonald.
Bobbie Jean Rogers, 72, of Magee, passed from this life Sunday, November 3, 2019, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee (601) 849-5031.
With the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office busy investigating burglaries, the department advised that there will be an expected increase in burglaries, general theft, and suicides as the holiday season approaches.

Elden “Biggie” Puckett passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2019, at the age of 85 at his residence in Mendenhall. He was born on July 24, 1934, to Jerome and Albertine (Edwards) Puckett in Magee.

A county resident has appealed to the Simpson County Board of Supervisors for relief on a $1,700 garbage bill.
Willie Sherman appeared in front of the Board of Supervisors last week seeking relief on his garbage bill, stating that the county refused to pick up his garbage.
Early Wednesday morning July 31st 2019, Simpson County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Mendenhall Police Dept. executed a search warrant at a home on Lee Street in Mendenhall.

Interim Sheriff Greg Reynolds reported on Tuesday April 23 2019, an area search was conducted for Elizabeth Barker. The search was extensive and included several local and state agencies. The search concluded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Barker was found on April 24 at approximately 8:00 a.m. at or near the family home.
A substitute teacher at Magee High School has reportly made inappropriate contact with a female student via the internet.
Simpson County School District leadership has refused comment, saying that the situation is a personnel matter, which is not subject to public information standards.

The regular meeting of Mendenhall’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen was held Wednesday, July 5, instead of Tueday, July 4, due to the holiday. It was the first meeting of the new Board of Aldermen, which consisted of two new faces.
After years of complying with restrictive hiring practices, the Simpson County School Board has issued payment to the law firm of Adams and Reese in conjunction with settlement of the court ordered consent decree from which the county has finally been released.
A hearing was held Friday January 12, to discuss the appeal of the Mendenhall Zoning Board’s decision to deny Jaron Priest’s request for an 18 feet variance on his building project.
The project encompasses three homes to be built on the lot located at 612 North Main Street.
The Simpson County Board of Supervisors opened the first meeting of 2018 on January 2 with the election of new leadership for the upcoming year. Brian Kennedy will take the reins as board president, and Mickey Berry will serve as vice president of the board.
