Alcohol to be on ballot

Whether Simpson County stays dry on goes wet will now be up to voters in November. 

The Simpson County Board of Supervisors approved placing the initiative on the ballot, which is a matter of protocol, for the General Election to be held November 5.  The county held a special meeting last Friday to approve the measure.

Linda F. Canoy, 72, of Mendenhall, Mississippi, passed away Monday, September 9, 2019 at her home in Mendenhall, Mississippi. She was born Friday, July 4, 1947.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee.

Vigil set for 9 year old

A candlelight vigil will be held this Friday night to remember Megan Purser.

The event will be held at Goodwater Baptist Church, Magee,  at 7 p.m.  Megan was the victim of a tragedy which claimed her life on May 19 of this year.

Hilda Rae Smith Roberts, 76, of Magee passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2018, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Born February 9, 1942, she was the daughter of the late R.T. and Edith Rae Smith.

Mary Imogene Franklin, 89, of Mendenhall, Mississippi, died Sunday at her home in Mendenhall. She was born Sunday, January 20, 1929.

Judy Carol Brown, 69, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019. She was born on January 22, 1949, to the late John Henry Brown and Ocie Audell (Sellers) Brown.

Judy is survived by brothers Harold Brown, Rickey Brown (Melinda), Regie Brown (Karon); sisters Betty McDonald, Patricia Ann McLeod and Connie Coley.


Mildred Lou Herchenhahn St. John

Mildred Lou Herchenhahn St. John, 88, of Magee, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was born Tuesday, March 11, 1930. Mildred was affectionately known by her friends and family as Mamma, Gran, and Mil, and spent her life serving the Lord through her service to others.

Sheriff reports of 41 accidents

Sheriff Donald O’Cain reported there were a total of 41 dispatches of vehicles that were called in for vehicles that slid from the roadway. 

Tuesday evening a fuel truck turned over on Highway 49 near D’Lo the sheriff reported it was empty.  There was also a log truck that turned over near Pinola. 




Ice remains on roads in parts of state; MDOT advises no travel in affected areas

JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues its response to the winter weather event statewide and continues to advise the public to stay off roads with reported icy conditions and to limit travel to emergencies only.


Dollar General robbed again

On January 6, two armed men entered the Dollar General Store located on Highway 28 West just outside of Magee and robbed it.  It was the second robbery of the store.

The gunmen held the clerks at gunpoint and demanded money from the register. After the pair took an undisclosed amount of money they left on foot.


SCA basketball

Simpson County Academy’s Cougar basketball teams had a busy week on the hardwood as they played games last week against Central Hinds Academy, Park Place Christian Academy, and Pelahatchie High School.
