Simpson Students visit Capital

– On Tuesday morning, the fourth grade class of Simpson County Academy took a field trip to the Mississippi State Capitol get an up close look of the legislative process in action.  The group met with the Simpson County delegation, Representative Price Wallace and Senator Chris Caughman, while on their tour.

Update on Boomer

Shane Givens notified the newspaper last week that he was not ready to give up on finding who shot and killed his family pet, Boomer.  There have been no leads in the case so the original $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the  person who was responsible for shooting his dog has been raised to $4,000.

School board looks at facility options

The board of the Simpson County School District called two special meetings prior to their regular board meeting on Jan. 9, each  with a specific purpose. One was to discuss the district’s use of ballfields for high school play in Magee.  The second meeting was to discuss the facilities use plan that had been produced by Bailey Consulting.






Missing Person Found

Interim Sheriff Greg Reynolds reported on Tuesday April 23 2019, an area search was conducted for Elizabeth Barker. The search was extensive and included several local and state agencies. The search concluded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Barker was found on April 24 at approximately 8:00 a.m. at or near the family home.

Mary E. Craft, 83, passed away Thursday at her home in Smith County.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 25, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, Magee. Burial followed in Old Good Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Louise Sims, age 100, departed this life on July 26, 2018, in Jackson, MS. Services for Mrs. Sims were Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Brownhill M.B. Church, Florence, MS. Mrs. Sims’ final resting place is Brownhill Church Cemetery. Services and arrangements were entrusted to Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home of Magee.

Gary Edward Shotts, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, in Mendenhall,  at the age of 59.    He was born on December 4, 1958, in Simpson County, to the late Kade Shotts and the late Faye McWilliams.

Mary Nell Harvey, 80, of Mt. Olive died Friday at her residence.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home Magee. Burial followed in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
