Vigil set for 9 year old

A candlelight vigil will be held this Friday night to remember Megan Purser.

The event will be held at Goodwater Baptist Church, Magee,  at 7 p.m.  Megan was the victim of a tragedy which claimed her life on May 19 of this year.

arrest report 8-22-2019

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 32 arrests from August 12 to August 19.

Chad Michael Dixon of 23 Golf Course Road Hattiesburg MS was arrested on August 12 and charged with possession of methamphetamine.


Dean McGovern

Dean was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  She had a large family that loved her dearly.  She had a loving heart and will be missed by all that knew her.


Martha Thames

Martha Smith Thames went to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born on December 20, 1934, to Ray Kelly Smith and Emmai Gallman Smith in Drew, MS.


Joy Parker

Joy Lee Gray-Parker Robinson died August 14, 2019.

She is survived by her son, William Eli Parker; daughter, Polly Robinson; brothers, Henry Eli Gray, Gerrard Gray, Johnny Gray; sisters, Marie Kelly, Naomi Crowell, Elaine Fuller, Pauline Pickle, Margaret Faye Biggs; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Mendenhall frontage road

Southern Rock LLC recently completed dirt work for the Mendenhall frontage road. The road will be located between East Street and the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 13. The project was completed on schedule and paving will begin soon.

Home invasion thwarted

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call that came in at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, August 23.

 The incident was described by investigator Leon Wedgeworth as a home invasion that occurred at a residence on Van Zandt Road in Braxton.


Pedestrian Killed on Hwy 49

On Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at approximately 7:59 PM, Magee Police Department responded to an accident involving a pedestrian on US 49 North near the intersection of US 49 North and 1st Avenue SE.  Upon arrival, officers determined that a pedestrian had attempted to cross US 49 and had been struck by two (2) vehicles.  The pedestr



Substitute messages student

A substitute teacher at Magee High School has reportly made inappropriate contact with a female student via the internet.

Simpson County School District leadership has refused comment, saying that the situation is a personnel matter, which is not subject to public information standards.

Cyril Marc McArthur



Cyril Marc McArthur, 71, passed away on June 27, 2019.

Visitation was held on Sunday, June 30, 2019, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Magee.  Funeral services followed at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial was in Brady Cemetery in Prentiss, Miss. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee handled arrangements.


Robert Devin, Sr.

Funeral services for Chief Rabbi and Spiritual Leader Robert Devine, Sr. were Thursday March 21, 2019, at 12 noon at the Mississippi Forestry & Agriculture Museum Auditorium, 1150 Lakeland Drive, Jackson, MS.

Rabbi Devine passed Sunday, March 17, 2019.

Burial was in HOIHCC Burial Grounds on Devine Lane in Braxton, MS.


G. B. Cole

G.B. Cole, 82, of Florence passed away Friday March 22, 2019. He was born Sunday, September 13, 1936.

Visitation was on Sunday, March 24, 2019.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 25, 2019, at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home Mendenhall. Burial followed at New Home Baptist Church Cemetery.

Addie M. Shoemaker, 80, of Mendenhall, died Friday, March 29, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg, Miss. She was born Monday, December 19, 1938.

Visitation was held on Sunday, March 31, 2019, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee.

There was no shortage of self-styled “pro-Trump conservatives” in this month’s Mississippi Republican primaries.

Not every candidate in every race ran a television advertisement including Donald  Trump’s picture or a pledge to stand by the president in protecting the border and Mississippi values, but quite a few did.


Charles Ray Cliburn

Charles Ray Cliburn passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at VA Medical Center in Jackson.  He was born on May 6, 1938, to the late Willie Bee Cliburn and Carmel Inez Williamson Cliburn.

In 1962, Charles Ray began serving his country in the United Stated Army.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Magee.


Hannah Brooke Hill

Hannah Brooke Hill, 24, of Byram, Miss., passed away August 11, 2019, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Visitation will be held August 14, 2019, 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Raleigh.


Harim Phillips

Mr. Harim Phillips went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the age of 65.  He was born on August 1, 1953, to his parents, the late John Ed Phillips and Mary May Phillips in Sunflower County, Mississippi.


Jerald Kennedy

Jerald Kennedy passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2019, at St. Dominic Hospital.   

 He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Nell Blackwell Kennedy; son, Andy Kennedy; daughter, Kim Kennedy Neely; grandson, Weston Neely (Hannah) and great-grandson, Cooper Neely.
