Alcohol to be on ballot

Whether Simpson County stays dry on goes wet will now be up to voters in November. 

The Simpson County Board of Supervisors approved placing the initiative on the ballot, which is a matter of protocol, for the General Election to be held November 5.  The county held a special meeting last Friday to approve the measure.



Nichols buried with full military honors

Linda F. Canoy

Linda F. Canoy, 72, of Mendenhall, Mississippi, passed away Monday, September 9, 2019 at her home in Mendenhall, Mississippi. She was born Friday, July 4, 1947.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee.

Vigil set for 9 year old

A candlelight vigil will be held this Friday night to remember Megan Purser.

The event will be held at Goodwater Baptist Church, Magee,  at 7 p.m.  Megan was the victim of a tragedy which claimed her life on May 19 of this year.

Pedestrian Killed on Hwy 49

On Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at approximately 7:59 PM, Magee Police Department responded to an accident involving a pedestrian on US 49 North near the intersection of US 49 North and 1st Avenue SE.  Upon arrival, officers determined that a pedestrian had attempted to cross US 49 and had been struck by two (2) vehicles.  The pedestr


Missing Person Found

Interim Sheriff Greg Reynolds reported on Tuesday April 23 2019, an area search was conducted for Elizabeth Barker. The search was extensive and included several local and state agencies. The search concluded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Barker was found on April 24 at approximately 8:00 a.m. at or near the family home.


Substitute messages student

A substitute teacher at Magee High School has reportly made inappropriate contact with a female student via the internet.

Simpson County School District leadership has refused comment, saying that the situation is a personnel matter, which is not subject to public information standards.

Robbery suspects held

On January 3, 2018, at approximately 9:57 p.m. , the manager of Wards Restaurant in Magee reported to the Magee Police Department via 911 that they had been robbed at gunpoint by a man who had taken an undisclosed amount of cash from the business. The suspect had then fled from the store. 


Body found and identified

At approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 20, the Magee Police Department responded to a call describing a dead body near the Highway 28 West and Highway 49 intersection.

Assistant Chief Joey Womack explained that a body was lying in the road not far from the CEFCO and Texaco service stations.

2017 Year in Review

Simpson County saw both highs and lows during the year 2017. New faces went into office and new members went onto boards. We have seen triumph in high school sporting teams who dominated the competition, but we also saw tragedy with armed robberies and crime throughout the county.



Arrest Reports 7-21-2017

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 23 arrests from September 11 to September 18.
Jason Jordan of 616 Hillen Bale Hattiesburg MS was arrested on September 16 and charged with possession of methamphetamine.
