Simpson County Ag Appreciation Day will be held on Friday, May 17, at the Simpson County Tech Center from 4-7 p.m.  Included are information on farm safety and a petting zoo.  Ribeye steak sandwiches with chips, drink and dessert will be sold.  The event is sponsored by SCTC FFA/MSU Extension Office.

Lester Eugene Ivy Jr., 39, of Mabelvale, Arkansas, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, in Texarkana, Texas. He was born Saturday, July 14, 1979.

Visitation was held on Saturday, May 4, 2019, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee.


Lovetta Jeralene Peacock

Lovetta Jeralene Peacock, 85, of Braxton, passed away April 28, 2019, at her home.

Visitation was held on May 2, 2019, at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, Mendenhall.

Services were held May 3, 2019, at the funeral home. Burial followed in Braxton City Cemetery.


Geneva S. Palmer

Geneva S. Palmer, 84, of Mendenhall, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Magee General Hospital in Magee. She was born Thursday, March 7, 1935.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, from 9 a.m. until 11a.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home  in Mendenhall.


James Robert Bankston

James Robert Bankston, 83, of Magee passed away Monday, April 22, at Magee General Hospital in Magee. He was born Saturday, May 11, 1935.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Dry Creek Baptist Church in Magee.


Home search leads to arrest of two

Interim Sheriff Greg Reynolds reports that on May 4,  deputies with the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant for the residence of Peggy and Wesley Thornton at 359 Albert Runnels Rd. During the search, deputies made contact with Wendell Counts, who was found in the basement of the residence.

Justice Court and Municipal Judge Eugene Knight Resigns

Municipal Judge of Magee Eugene Knight turned in his resignation letter on June 21. Mayor Dale Berry confirmed that Knight’s resignation will become effective June 30. Knight has served as Magee’s municipal judge since May of 2003.Berry said, “There are no improprieties in the City of Magee concerning Judge Knight.

School board delays election

After years of complying with restrictive hiring practices, the Simpson County School Board has issued payment to the law firm of Adams and Reese in conjunction with settlement of the court ordered consent decree from which the county has finally been released.
