Update on Boomer

Shane Givens notified the newspaper last week that he was not ready to give up on finding who shot and killed his family pet, Boomer.  There have been no leads in the case so the original $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the  person who was responsible for shooting his dog has been raised to $4,000. 



Road Closures

As of February 15, 2020, Simpson County has the two following road closures: Gatesville Rd at Old Pearl Fire Dept and Hopewell Rd. at the Pearl River Bridge. Hopewell Rd. is not at this time flooded on the Simpson County side but is heavily flood on the Copiah County side. There is water over the south lane of Old River Rd.

Lee throws out first pitch

Magee High School graduate Cynahmon Lee was selected to throw out the first pitch for the home opener baseball game for the University of Southern Mississippi. Cynahmon earned her selection by being voted to represent the Student Eagle Club. GO TROJANS!

This was the sixth week of the 2020 Legislative Session.  House members had a busy week full of committee meetings and hearings.  The deadline for the introduction of general bills and constitutional amendments is Monday, February 17, so members will remain busy over the next few weeks deciding which drafted bills will make it onto the House fl



Is Trump trying to silence buddy?

Attorney General William Barr is taking deserved criticism for undercutting his prosecutors to try to get a better sentencing deal for Donald Trump crony Roger Stone.

  Barr’s misplaced loyalties — putting his boss’ desires ahead of impartial justice — are only part of the story, and arguably not even the most important.


James Raylon Mathew

James Raylon Mathew, 51, of Magee, Mississippi, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at Magee General Hospital. He was born Saturday, July 6, 1968.

Merridee Elaine Yates, 83, of Taylorsville, Miss., passed away at Calvary Homes in Lancaster, Penn. on  February 16, 2020.

Visitation will be held February 21, 2020,  5 - 9 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Taylorsville.


Betty Jo Sullivan

Betty Jo Sullivan, 89, of Mize, Miss, died January 31, 2020, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Visitation was held on February 2, 2020,  at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Taylorsville before funeral services at First Baptist Church of Mize. Burial followed in Zion Hill M. B. Church Cemetery in Mize.

Jettie Mae Craft, 85, of Magee, Mississippi, died Tuesday at Magee General Hospital. She was born Monday, October 31, 1932.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee.


Johnny T. Tullos

Johnny T Tullos, 70, of Braxton, Mississippi, died Monday at Bedford Care Nursing Home in Mendenhall. He was born Tuesday, February 3, 1948.
