Trojan Players Recognized

The Magee Trojans had an outstanding season notching 10 wins and making a third round playoff appearance. The team worked hard throughout the season, and several of the Trojan players were recognized for their accomplishments by being named to the All-Division teams. The Trojans had 11 players to receive All-Division honors.

Funeral services for Reverend Andrew Keys, 67, Collins, MS were held on Saturday, November 20, 2019 at 1PM from Rocky Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Collins.  Interment was in the Old Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, Collins, MS.  Program Officiant was Reverend Dr. L. C.

Thumbs Down

Thumbs down on the condition of downtown streets this hole measures almost four feet by two feet.  It also appears as though the city is no longer sweeping streets downtown.  They were doing Main Avenue but the side streets are not being maintained.

Arrest Reports 12-5-2019

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 35 arrests from November 25 to December 2.

Billy Sullivan of 113 Gary Road Magee MS was arrested on December 2 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and writing bad checks.

Simpson played one game last week against Jackson Prep.

Girls Game Jackson Prep

Simpson 52 Prep 42-Scoring for Simpson were with Alissa Brewer with 23 points, T K Catchings 11, Anna Claire Walker 6, Gracie Bowen 5, Ma’Nia Womack 4, and Maddie Moody 3. The win improved Simpson’s record to 12-0 on the season.


Nelda R. Anderson

Nelda R. Anderson, 83, of Magee passed away Friday, November 22, 2019, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Visitation was Sunday, November 24, 2019, at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, Magee.  Services were  Monday, November 25, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Dry Creek Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Willie Rayford Bynum

Willie Rayford Bynum was born on March 27, 1931 in Magee to the late Junior and Mollie Shows. Willie went to be with the Lord and her husband of 50 years, Roy Lee Bynum, on November 16, 2019.

Rayburn Little

Rayburn Little, 82,  passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2019, at his home.  He was born on June 14, 1937, to Dewey Little and Lucille (Thompson) Little.

He was a retired cattle farmer.  He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

L W Westmorland Jr.

L W Westmoreland, Jr., 91, of Pinola, Mississippi, passed away Thursday, November 28th 2019. He was born Sunday, May 6, 1928.

Visitation was held on  December 2, 2019 at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall.

Evelyn A. Gosa

Evelyn A. Gosa, 96, went home to Jesus on Wednesday night, November 13, 2019, in Collins, Mississippi.

Evelyn enjoyed reading, sewing, playing the piano, and dominos.  She was an active member of Main Street Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.

Nathan James Hall

Our precious little angel sent from above, Nathan James Hall, one month old, went to be with Jesus and his sister, Olivia and brother, Jackson surrounded by his loving family on November 19, 2019, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Gloria Luby Pettigrew

Gloria Luby Pettigrew, 74, passed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, November 21, 2019, at her home in Braxton. The family received friends for visitation on Sunday, November 24, from 1 – 3 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. The service began at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.



Due to the potential inclement weather for Thursday, April 18, Simpson County School District will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. Classes will resume on Monday, April 22, 2019


School board delays election

After years of complying with restrictive hiring practices, the Simpson County School Board has issued payment to the law firm of Adams and Reese in conjunction with settlement of the court ordered consent decree from which the county has finally been released.
