Joe Garner, Sr. 75, of Raleigh, Mississippi, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2020. He was born Tuesday, July 25, 1944.

The board of the Simpson County School District called two special meetings prior to their regular board meeting on Jan. 9, each with a specific purpose. One was to discuss the district’s use of ballfields for high school play in Magee. The second meeting was to discuss the facilities use plan that had been produced by Bailey Consulting.
The Distinguished Young Women program will be held January 18 at Boswell Auditorium at 7 p.m. with three young women vying for the county’s Distinguished Young Woman 2020.

Several reports of leaks came to the Magee Board of Aldermen for attention at their recent meeting. The leaks have followed recent borings as a result of new cable being put in Magee for high speed internet.
The Simpson County School District may have the final word on the Washington Street Park, which the City of Magee has asked the district to transfer to them.
A state law requires that if a school property no longer serves the needs of the community its ownership will revert to the school district.
The Town of Braxton held a special election on December 20 to fill a vacancy left by Mayor Rodney Barnett and a vacant alderman position.
Only two candidates qualified for the election to the position of mayor, Shane Brown and Georgia Smith.
According to Simpson County Deputy Superintendent, Debbie Davis, the scores for the schools in the district seem to be showing big improvement in the set of benchmarks measured over where they were from the first of the year.
Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports its first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2019. The reported case is in Smith County.
In 2018, Mississippi had 50 WNV cases and no deaths. The first case was reported in mid-July.

Unofficial election results came in last night, and many of the local races were decided by a wide margin. Of the 17,148 registered voters in Simpson County, over 8,896 cast their ballots, and participated deciding new leadership. This is one of the largest turnouts with over 51 percent of the voting population participating.
On February 29 at approximately 1 p.m. a resident on Heed Neely Road returned home and discovered that their front door had been kicked open and the burglars were still inside the home.

At home with his wife, Rev. Donald Rex Kleeb, 72, joined his Heavenly Father on Friday, September 27, 2019, after a battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the 12 noon memorial service on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Miss.

Carolyn Virginia Sullivan, 82, of Magee, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Virginia was born Thursday, June 24, 1937.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee.
Hazel Lee Mangum Buckley, 94, of Brandon, Miss., passed away Monday, April 8, at Brandley House in Ocala, Florida.
Visitation and funeral services were held on Friday, April 12, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Mendenhall. Burial followed in Mendenhall City Cemetery. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall handled arrangements.
James Robert Bankston, 83, of Magee passed away Monday, April 22, at Magee General Hospital in Magee. He was born Saturday, May 11, 1935.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at the Mount Olive Presbyterian Church for Ann Tew Magee, 73, of Mount Olive, who passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019, in Jackson.
Interment was in the McNair Cemetery in Mount Olive. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mount Olive was in charge of the arrangements.
