Update on Boomer

Shane Givens notified the newspaper last week that he was not ready to give up on finding who shot and killed his family pet, Boomer.  There have been no leads in the case so the original $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the  person who was responsible for shooting his dog has been raised to $4,000. 



Road Closures

As of February 15, 2020, Simpson County has the two following road closures: Gatesville Rd at Old Pearl Fire Dept and Hopewell Rd. at the Pearl River Bridge. Hopewell Rd. is not at this time flooded on the Simpson County side but is heavily flood on the Copiah County side. There is water over the south lane of Old River Rd.

Lee throws out first pitch

Magee High School graduate Cynahmon Lee was selected to throw out the first pitch for the home opener baseball game for the University of Southern Mississippi. Cynahmon earned her selection by being voted to represent the Student Eagle Club. GO TROJANS!

Schools to give park to Magee

The Simpson County School District may have the final word on the Washington Street Park, which the City of Magee has asked the district to transfer to them. 

A state law requires that if a school property no longer serves the needs of the community its ownership will revert to the school district.  



WNV case reported

Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports its first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2019. The reported case is in Smith County.

In 2018, Mississippi had 50 WNV cases and no deaths. The first case was reported in mid-July.

James David Parker, 61, of Huntsville, Texas, died Tuesday at St Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood ID. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 PM at White Oak Baptist Church. Ms. Bridgett Ann Carson, age 51, departed this life February 3, 2018 in Jackson.

A service for Ms. Carson was held Saturday, Feb. 10 at New Vineyard Church, Rained Road, Jackson. Her final resting place is Autumn Woods Cemetery, Northside Drive, Jackson.



Jettie Mae Craft

Jettie Mae Craft, 85, of Magee, Mississippi, died Tuesday at Magee General Hospital. She was born Monday, October 31, 1932.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee.


Johnny T. Tullos

Johnny T Tullos, 70, of Braxton, Mississippi, died Monday at Bedford Care Nursing Home in Mendenhall. He was born Tuesday, February 3, 1948.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall.


Benny Harold Prince

Benny Harold Prince passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Simpson General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on October 18, 1935, in Simpson County, to John Berlie Prince and Mary (Heitt) Prince. 


Ronnie Pokey Gaylor

Mr. Ronnie Pokey Gaylor, age 61, departed this life on March 7, 2018 at his home in Jackson. Services were held Saturday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at Truevine M.B. Church, Jackson. Mr. Graylor’s final resting place is Autumn Woods Cemetery, Northside Drive, Jackson.
