Lynn Hughes Sorey, age 53, of Raleigh, Mississippi, departed this life on Thursday, October 8, 2020. She was born February 6, 1967.
Visitation was Monday evening, October 12, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., at Colonia Chapel in Magee. There was a graveside service at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Smith County on Tuesday October 13, at 10 a.m. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee was in charge of arrangements, (601) 849-5031.
Lynn graduated from Raleigh High School in 1985. She graduated from Mississippi College, magna cum laud, in 1989. While at Mississippi College Lynn was a member of many academic honor societies. Lynn graduated from Mississippi College School of Law in 1992 and was the first female attorney to start a private law practice in Smith County, Mississippi. Lynn practiced law in Raleigh from 1992 until 2008, when she retired due to health reasons. While practicing law she served as Smith County Prosecutor, Board Attorney for the Town of Raleigh, and City Prosecutor for the towns of Mize, Taylorsville and Raleigh. Lynn was appointed to the Task Force on Gender Fairness from 1998-2002 by former Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Gandy to assist with a report to the Mississippi Supreme Court and the Mississippi State Legislature.
After retiring from the practice of law, Lynn was able to homeschool her son and was instrumental in establishing a homeschool BETA Club for exceptional homeschool students in Smith and Simpson counties.
Lynn was a long time member of the Raleigh Woman’s Club. Lynn grew up attending First Baptist Church in Raleigh, where she and her husband met in the youth group. Lynn was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church in Raleigh, where she previously taught children’s Sunday school.
Lynn was preceded in death by her grandparents, Chester and Nettie Mangum Hughes of Mize and Charles and Lucile Reddoch of Laurel, and her sister Lisa Headrick of Raleigh.
Lynn is survived by her parents, Dr. Verlon Hughes and Patsy Hughes of Raleigh; her father and mother-in-law, Robert and Lou Sorey of Raleigh; and by her husband of 27 years, Circuit Judge Stanley Sorey; and son, John Robert Sorey of Raleigh.
Lynn was a loving wife, mother, daughter and friend. Lynn loved people and was known for her constant smile.
