The Simpson Academy Cougars are in the throes of preparing for their 2024 season.
In a recent practice the defense was extremely sharp under the leadership of senior linebacker Ben Kennedy. The Cougars flowed to the ball well, making accurate reads, putting themselves in position to make plays. Braden Duncan, Conor Cone, Chase Adcock, and Eli Brewer consistently handled their responsibilities and routinely made the right play. Coaches were able to get an extended look at some rotational players and there was very little drop off in terms of talent after substitutions.
Head Coach Todd Mangum spoke about the importance of building depth and staying healthy throughout the season as a key to sustaining the success the Cougars have enjoyed.
On offense during the team session the Cougars moved the ball well with some different personnel in place. Running back Hayes Berry looked sharp and filled in as backup QB during the practice. Berry was a big part of the Cougars’ success last season working in tandem with Kennedy at the running back position. A memorable play from the practice saw Berry play action and roll to his right before setting his feet and throwing a 35-yard pass that Chanse Funchess was able to catch in stride.
The Cougars appeared to be in great shape with every player giving his all as their season is set to kickoff next Friday at home.
