The current unresolved gambling debate in Mississippi is online sports betting.
The House, perhaps appreciative of Super Bowl tickets and other perks from lobbyists, and also craving the high of $40 million to $80 million per year in new taxes, is for it. Every little bit to eliminate the state income tax will help.
The Senate, perhaps more appreciative of the investments and jobs provided by the state’s casinos, wants to keep online sports betting restricted to those businesses, even though it creates an artificial barrier in a rapidly evolving market.

On Mother’s Day last Sunday, I started thinking back to when I became a mother many years ago and my perplexity over the whole process.
I was an only child. I remembered nothing about being a baby myself. I never paid attention to my younger cousins as they came along, since they just lay in their beds and couldn’t do the interesting stuff my older cousins and I could do, like climbing trees and shooting Dr. Pepper bottles off the fence. I never babysat. So I had a limited perspective on dealing with babies. In fact, I made it a point not to deal with babies.

Those who pay taxes, no matter their sexual orientation, should be appalled by the revelation of frivolous spending of HIV-AIDS grant funds by a few Mississippi nonprofits and how little they accomplished toward the grant funding’s objectives.
State Auditor Shad White, whose agency exposed the waste, was justified in his disbelief that the Mississippi State Department of Health, which administered the federal grant funding, allowed such expenditures to occur. Among the more outrageous examples of spending the auditors found:

Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg was the reigning National League MVP. Madonna’s “Material Girl” was No. 1 on the hit charts. The Los Angeles Lakers, led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson were well on their way to the NBA Championship.

Yes, and on April 10, 1985, William Carey College (it would not become a university until 2006) named Bobby Halford as its next baseball coach, beginning in 1986.

It doesn’t take a college degree to predict this one: Mississippi’s request for federal assistance for the tornado damage in Walthall County, Pike County and other areas will be denied.
After all, Sarah Huckabee Sanders was a press secretary for President Trump during his first term. She is now the governor of Arkansas, and when her state was hit by the same storm system that smacked Southwest Mississippi, she asked for help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. But FEMA said no.
