Summertime fun would not be complete without fresh, sweet, cold watermelon! Most days David Herring is found selling Smith County watermelons, Vardaman sweet potatoes, his own freshly made boiled peanuts and other seasonal produce out of his truck in Magee. Once a familiar face at the 5 way stop downtown, he now sets up shop under the large tree in the parking lot of the old Sears building, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. “The Lord blessed me ‘cause the shade tree means a lot!” According to Herring, 74, the watermelons have been selling well this season at a cost of $12 each.
