IHL: Felecia Nave no longer president of Alcorn State

Felecia Nave is out as president of Alcorn State University, according to a press release from the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees.

The board approved the change during executive session at its regular meeting Thursday. Ontario Wooden, the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, will serve as interim president at the state’s oldest historically Black university, effective immediately.

McCann Receives Generous Scholarship from MAFEPD

Magee High School senior Kymiah McCann has been named a recipient of the 2023 Mississippi Association of Federal Education Program Directors (MAFEPD) Scholarship.

McCann will receive a $2,500 scholarship to support her post-secondary education. She is one of two recipients to be awarded the scholarship in the state of Mississippi. She will also represent the state in the national competition for scholarships awarded by the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators.

The Simpson Central School (SCS) Beta Club represented their school and district well during the Mississippi Junior Beta Club Convention in Biloxi on March 7-0. SCS Beta Club had 28 members to compete in the statewide competition.
Competing in a wide variety of academic and team events, the SCS Robotics Team placed third in Junior Robotics and SCS Beta Club member and fifth grader Fletcher Jenkins placed fourth in Elementary Woodworking.

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is announcing that as of today, all school districts impacted by the March 24 tornadoes and storms have resumed classes except for South Delta School District (SDSD), which is planning to reopen April 14.

The districts impacted are Amory County School District, Carroll County School District, Humphreys County School District, Monroe County School District, New Albany Public Schools, SDSD and Winona-Montgomery Consolidated District.

After a push this session to fully fund public schools, districts will receive $100 million outside of the regular school funding formula because lawmakers passed a bill they say aims to put more money in the classroom.

While superintendents say they’re grateful for the additional funds, some are pushing back on the notion that the current funding formula doesn’t directly support students.

High School students are invited to attend the Mississipppi Soil and Water Conservation Youth Camp to be held at the FFA Center in Raymond, Miss., on June 11-15, sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts (MACD).
Students entering grades 10, 11 or 12, or who are 2023 graduates can participate by being sponsored by their local Soil and Water Conservation District.
