The Simpson County School Board took their February monthly meeting on the road, visiting Simpson Central to see the progress being made on the construction project there.
The project is progressing well and is expected to be completed on schedule.
Board comments opened the meeting. Member Stanley Bulger commented on progress at Mendenhall Jr. High and said he wanted to keep focus on Mendenhall Jr. High and replacing that facility.

At approximately 9 a.m., today, Feb. 9, Magee High School administrators were informed of a threat made on social media by an unidentified individual.

Contact was made to the Magee Police Department and Simpson County Sheriff’s Department. Students and staff are placed on a lock down until further notice. Police and school administrators are now on the scene.

Student and staff safety is our top priority, and we will keep you informed once more information becomes available.

New bill would raise starting salary for teacher’s assistants to $20,000 annually

Teacher assistants could receive a $3,000 raise next school year under the amended bill that passed the House of Representatives last week.

Teacher assistants in Mississippi currently have a minimum salary of $17,000. The full-time employees can receive a local supplement from their district to bolster their salaries, but the Mississippi Department of Education does not track the size of these supplements for teacher assistants.

Hunter Ward was named the Most Improved Fireman for the Braxton Volunteer Fire Department. Ward was previously a member of the Junior Department before switching to Volunteer at age 18.

The Braxton Volunteer Fire Department held their awards ceremony on Saturday, February 4.
After the fellowshipping and a meal, three awards were given at the ceremony. William Bradshaw received the Randy Hayes Award given to the fireman who completes the most runs. Bradshaw also received the Everett Award, which is given to the Fireman of the Year. Hunter Booth was named Most Improved.
The Braxton Volunteer Fire Department’s service to their community is made possible thanks to the efforts of these and other dedicated volunteers.

Wagon Train Come through Simpson Coutny

The Dixie National Wagon Train Mt. Olive Ride spent Sunday and Monday in Simpson County before pushing up Highway 49 and into Jackson. Over 200 riders participate in the event every year led by Wagon Master Tommy Sullivan. The wagon train is expected to make it to Dixie Nationals on February 9.

A new report from Boston University’s Wheelock Educational Policy Center found that Mississippi students retained in the 3rd grade under the Literacy-Based Promotion Act achieved higher English Language Arts (ELA) scores over time.

Corporal punishment was used in schools 4,300 times last year. Here’s what districts are doing to change that.

Simpson County School District (SCSD) held its 2022-2023 District Spelling Bee today, Feb. 2, at Magee Elementary School.
The Spelling Bee consisted of 25 contestants, representing Magee Elementary, Mendenhall Elementary, Magee Middle, Mendenhall Jr. High, and Simpson Central schools. The top three finalists were

Sam Kinslow is a law student at Mississippi College School of Law. Kinslow and others from the Mississippi College Law ABA Arbitration team recently competed in the National Moot Court Competition in Chicago. Only the top eight teams in the nation were invited. Sam is in his second year of law school at Mississippi College School of Law. He serves MC Law as vice president and is a member of several boards.

Award winning photographer Willie Bernoudy donated two of his photos to Mendenhall Elementary after speaking with Mrs. Angela Snellgrove’s class.
Bernoudy is a former student of Snellgrove and wanted to take the opportunity to give back and inspire the next generation.
Bernoudy said, “Whatever you do in life you do it with a purpose, so it inspires someone from the next generation. I had a blast with these children and I want to thank Mrs. Snellgrove for inviting me.”
