Mendenhall High School Valedictorian Kathryn Grace Brewer is the daughter of Jason and Crystal Brewer of Mendenhall. Gracie is a member of the Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, National Technical Honor Society, HOSA, and Phi Theta Kappa. Gracie was selected to represent her class at the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Summit (HOBY) and was selected as a Future Leader of Simpson County and chosen to attend Mississippi Girls’ State (although those events were impacted by the pandemic).

Hobbs signs with Tougaloo

TJ Hobbs signed an athletic scholarship to join the Tougaloo College Baseball Team. Hobbs will be joining the Bulldogs to play short stop. Hobbs is expected to start for the Bulldogs as a freshman, and the team will be relying on him to make big plays. Hobbs offered advice to under classmen, saying, “Keep God first, then your books, and everthing else will be all right.” He was joined by his family, from left, Aubrey Hobbs, Taneia Hobbs, Josiah Hobbs, James Hobbs, TJ Hobbs, Montavius Hobbs, Gwen Hobbs, Myricks Cole, and Nala Hobbs.

Dampier signs with Tougaloo

Javeon Dampier will further his education and baseball career at Tougaloo College. Dampier will be joining the Bulldogs as an infielder playing third and first base. Dampier said his coaches expect him to come in and be a leader, a workhorse, and hit the baseball exceptionally well. Javeon was joined by his family on signing day, from left, Laketha Dampier, Javeon Dampier, Demetrius Dampier, Mollie Dampier, and James Williams.

The Magee Trojans Baseball Team is headed to the South State Championship after sweeping the Southeast Lauderdale Tigers in a best of three series.
The first game of the series was an 8 inning nail biter, thanks to both teams playing outstanding defense. Adam May was the starting pitcher for the Trojans and only allowed a single hit through 8 innings and struck out 12 batters. The Trojans finally broke through in the bottom of the 8th. Brennon McNair found the gap with his bat to drive in the game winning run.

Grim has signed with Millsaps

The Magee Trojans’ Preston Grim has signed an athletic scholarship to join the Millsaps College Football Team. He will join the Majors as an offensive lineman. Preston, seated center, was joined by his parents, Donnie and Stacy Grim, and family.

Mendenhall High School has selected representatives for Boys and Girls State this summer.
Three participants are selected for each program. Drew Griffith, Neland Sullivan and Seth Ammon will represent the school for Boys state. Raegan Bramlett, Marya Hobbs, and Jania Barnes will represent the school for Girls State.
The school offered a special thanks to Peoples Bank for sponsoring the participants this year.

The Beau Rivage in Biloxi hosted 265 job seekers at a career expo last week, and 70 people were offered positions that day. The Beau Rivage still had another 80 open positions posted to its website on Monday.

Mississippi casinos are setting revenue records, but they’re struggling to find workers

At the Beau Rivage, even a job fair comes with the added razzle-dazzle expected from one of the state’s most prominent casinos: sequin-clad show girls, an ice sculpture and a musical performance.

And, of course, several dozen open jobs and on-the-spot interviews.

Service industry workers for the state’s casinos are in high demand. If there was ever a time for some of the state’s top revenue earners to put on a show to lure in potential hires, it’s now.

The NCAA Baseball Committee Friday named its 20 potential regional tournament sites and Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Miss all made the cut. The 16 actual sites will be revealed at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 30.

We will get to what this means, but first we should just take a step back and marvel at the fact that the Magnolia State, relatively small and sparsely populated, gets 15% of the potential NCAA Regional sites.

MTV Exhibit at Grammy Museum opens to public

The GRAMMY Museum Mississippi in Cleveland launched its first major exhibition to mark the 40th anniversary of MTV, the music video television network that inspired a cultural awakening.

The exhibit, called MTV Turns Forty, shares the role of media executive and Jackson native Bob Pittman, who led the team that created MTV in August 1981. It also features artifacts from music legends like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Run-DMC and Aerosmith.

The exhibit opens to the public on Friday, and it was unveiled during a special reception Thursday evening.

Mississippians age 12 and up can now receive COVID-19 vaccines

The use of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine has opened up to children as young as 12 in Mississippi, offering a way to protect the nation’s adolescents before they head back to school in the fall and paving the way for them to return to more normal activities .

This move opens up vaccination against COVID-19 to 164,619 preteens and teens in Mississippi, according to Mississippi State Department of Health Communications Director, Liz Sharlot.

Democratic National Committee to invest in Mississippi, other red-state parties

The Democratic National Committee and Democratic state parties have reached a four-year agreement to guarantee more investment in state political infrastructure, including a “Red State Fund” for GOP-controlled states such as Mississippi.

Mississippi Democratic leaders and candidates have for years decried a lack of investment of money and manpower by the national party in Mississippi races and party infrastructure as the state has grown more solidly Republican up and down the ballot.

In a more fair and just Mississippi, James Thomas Bell — JT to his family and friends around Starkville — probably would have attended his hometown college, then Mississippi A&M, where he surely would have become a baseball star.

Of course, in a more fair and just Starkville, Bell and other Black children could have attended 12 years of high school and not had to work the fields to help feed their families. Those schools did not exist in Bell’s day.

Reeves still silent as Board of Education vacancies again stall key votes

Gulfport School District is awaiting approval for additional flexibility next year to be able to reduce achievement gaps, increase student learning and other goals because the board overseeing public education in the state has too many vacancies to take a vote.

And in one Delta county, funding for an early learning program for preschool children hangs in the balance for the same reason.

Congratulations to Nicole Sandifer for placing 3rd in the State Championships for the 200m dash.

The Magee Trojans Girls Track 4x400m relay team are State Champions. The team consists of Dakiya Walker, Kymiah McCann, Makyah Posey, and Nicole Sandifer.
