At midday Monday through Friday Joe White can be found at Picket Fence Books on Main Street in Mendenhall. Anyone entering his bookstore steps a bit back in time with the books, antiques, and memorabilia, inhaling the familiar scents reminiscent of simpler times. The coffee pot is always on, and like the conversation and stories, it’s free!

Lay-off ends in dream job

I have had the privilege over the last several months of interviewing Simpson County residents who have seen their lifelong dreams come to fruition.
Joe White, owner of White’s Picket Fence Books in Mendenhall, is an example of never giving up on a dream; he turns 80 on November 22, 2023.

Bebe credits God and Ty, her rocks, to have gotten her this far. The couple still lean heavily upon Phil. 4:5b-7 after Bebe’s cancer diagnosis, primarily God is near. “That’s why you can have that confidence. It’s not the confidence in me and him (Ty).” “It’s because God is near,” said Ty.
