As a part of the celebration of Simpson County’s 200th birthday, the Bicentennial Committee is sponsoring an essay contest for seniors at any Simpson County high school and those being home schooled.
The top three essays will earn cash prizes of $500 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third.
The topic is “Simpson County: A Place to Celebrate.” The required length is 500-600 words, and the essay must be typed and double-spaced. The contest is open only to seniors, and those students must be residents of Simpson County, not just attending a Simpson County school.
The essay is not a research paper, so no documentation, bibliography or footnotes are required. It will be judged on content and thought, originality and creativity, clarity of expression, organization and competent use of Standard English.
Students are to submit four copies of the essay by Friday, April 5, at 5 p.m. Each copy must include a cover sheet with the student’s name, school (or state “Home Schooled”) home address and phone number.
Essays are to be turned in to either the Magee or the Mendenhall Public Library by the deadline. Winners will be announced in April.
